I need a new computer :) All computer geeks and whizzes welcome!

    hey all,

well I have discovered after a long while of putting up with it, that my home PC is pretty f*cked, hardware wise I think now that I cannot get it to work properly.

enough is enough so am gonna start looking in to purchasing another computer. brand new with a warranty.

where do I start looking? It is only a home pc, but as computers seem to get outdated pretty fast with the movement of technology, I am looking to get a pretty descent spec one now so I wont have to upgrade anytime soon in the near future. I dont play hardout games or anything, but would like some descent memory etc etc. I dont know much about computers at the moment.

I am also not looking to buy a complete package. Am only really looking for the tower complete. Prefer Pentium, but open to other things.

What sort of system or specs should I be looking out for and what kind of money are we talking for a particular system?

How many people here dont believe in just buying mainstream branded models, over those models that are just full of branded hardware but isn't put together by some 'reputable company'??

any advice is appreciated .. by the looks of things, I am hoping to budget myself around the $600 mark for the tower itself. Everything else that I need I basically got which I will just use from my other system.

    Thanks

Home Office PC Tower for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand

    $1Reserve AMD 2400+ for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand

These are a few I found. I would suggest you to search up and see which ones you prefer and go from there

Go to PriceSpy - Compare prices for PC parts from New Zealand's online retailers and have a look at the prices there, they list the parts from the cheapest price in NZ. Might have to do a bit of running around but worth it if the savings are large enough. I don't believe in mainstream branded computers (Acer, HP etc.). They always draw you in with figures like Hard drive space or RAM size and skimp on motherboard or graphics card. Only decent mainstream branded systems are Dell XPS series. But if you buy the parts seperately you can build the same computer for quite a bit cheaper.

I dont know much about computers at the moment.
heres a better question instead of having random numbers and bits that dont mean diddly to you.

what do you understand of computers?

and what will it mainly be used for in the future?

and do you need an operating system (os) ie windows xp vista etc
before you know, awake? makes sense, no?

Umm, dont understand alot, except the usual figures of speed/memory etc, it will be a good solid PC computer, usually just for the usual shit, homework, study, internet, bit of gaming but not alot (not much at all really), but I want something thats quite descently paced, and has some descent memory etc, so I dont have to upgrade too soon in the near future. Something that is reliable, and comes with warranty pretty much.

and doesn't matter if it comes with O.S or not, because will sort that out myself if it doesn't, but if its not going to make too much in price diff, coming with XP would be good

ur probably going to have to spend a lil more than 600 if u want it to be future proof

    2gb ram (50-150, brand dependant)
dual core processor (100-200, speed dependant)
    300gb+ hdd (80-150, size dependant)
    graphics card (150-300, model dependant)
    motherboard (50-150, brand dependant)
    DVD burner (40-60)
Case and Power Suply (70-200, your choice for looks)

windows ontop of that will be about $180

Looking at about $800~1k at least Ben.. Go for AMD processor if you are on a budget. Don't need 300GB hdd as Jase said LOL.. 1GB ram will be fine as long as you're not on Vista, althought 2GB is cheap enough so why not. Get a Gigabyte motherboard, can pick cheap AMD one with onboard video for about 80$+gst.

I was just about to make the same thread lol (darn power cut messed up one of my computers).

If you buy a new computer is it possible to recover the data from my old computer by using the hard-drive from my old computer (and putting it into the new computer? (i want everything that was on the computer to remain as it was but have a more powerful computer).

You can recover all your data but you will need to re-install windows and all your motherboard/graphics drivers since they are different. Just make sure the stuff you wana keep isn't on the partition that you are gona format to install windows on.

True, he didn't give enough details to let us know what is actually wrong with the old computer. What does it do when you try to boot up? Does it get stuck at 'Verifying DMI pool'? Does it just reboot just before it gets to Windows?

Got something similar to this last year from PB tech penrose for just over a grand, 2gb, 350 hard d, 256mb gigabyte graphics card, dvd burner, and the mother board thing (computer knob)

Works awsome I do not play any games my self but i had cyrsis (or some halo type computer game on it) and worked great. I has also been used for movie editing and worked great as well.

hmm yeah fully future proofing would mean, getting the highest or close to, highest spec thats available now. Im not after that. Just something half descent, and not crap quality

ull never fullyfuture proof it as it would cost u over 10k to do that

the system i posted up will be good for a couple of years, want it to last any longer and ull have to spend more $$

i paid 2200 for my system about 6 months ago and i recon it will last 4 years before its completly outdated

I doubt that. Technology advances at an exponential rate; as when new technology is created, it is used to increase the efficiency of production of new technology. You can't really put a timeframe on how long your computer will remain "up with the play".

Future proofing is a waste of time IMO. You can spend $8000 on a top system, only to find 3 months down the track it is no longer top-shelf; and because of that it has halved in cost. Not to mention it surfs the internet and watches/edits movies at the same rate as your mates $1100 meataxe. Really, get what you need now, and when you require it for extra applications just upgrade again.

Ah yes... I get you. Just by saying "completely outdated" I was thinking you were meaning it had reached the point where it could no long be compared to modern computers of the time, not meaning "totally unusable".
