Creating a website...

I'm interested, what programes have people used to create thier websites, and how did they find useing them?? Easy??? Pain in the arse??? Cost money?? Free??
You see, i'm thinking about making my own site.... just for the hell of it really. To post up info about our racing civic, and perhaps now that it's finished (kinda), to post up info about other peoples cars (if they bring them to us for modifying)..
Any help would be appreciated. I have had a fiddle with MS Front page before, but meh.. wasn't too impressed by it.

Well to make a decent website you kinda have to know what your doing. If you don't know any coding languages (like JavaScript or HTM

then there are several design based programs you can use (the later versions of FrontPage, or Dreamweaver) but personally I hate them, and believe you can't really do too much fine tuning without knowledge of the code. However, if the website you want to make is going to be pretty basic, then either of those programs should be fine. FrontPage is pretty good for basic pages, but don't except do to much fancy stuff without doing a bit of research

A knowledge of HTML will always help too.

Places like Geocities have website builders that you can use (I think it's all free) but again, I hate them, and the functionality is really limited.

If you manage to get the programs and build the website, the next step is finding a server. There are quite a few free web hosting places on the net. Generally the amount of space they give you is limited, and the URLs are usually long and shitty, but sufficient for basic websites. Google holds the answers to finding places like that.

i used a program call web page maker (http://www.webpage-maker.com/), was the easiest program for a noob like me to pick up and throw a page together with. I tried to get my head round a few of the more popular choises, but it ended up doing my head in. I used one of the sample pages with this and ran from there, its all WYSIWYG and gives a good representation of what you are making.

Main drawbacks are it does not open an HTML page or any other file format other than its own native so editing existing pages is a pain in the arse.

Yeah you might as well learn html as Frontpage etc. It's not all that hard actually, have a look aroung the net for web-page tutorials and have a bit of a play with that. A lot of sites offer free basic website templates where you only need to put your own information into a pre-built page.

Download a simple one or find a site you like, go to "view", "source" and the code will open, copy and paste it into Notepad and save it as "index.html" it'll turn into a link. Armed with a tutorial try changing things like fonts etc in source, save the changes and refresh the page, you'll see the changes.

It all becomes clear eventually!

I use drewamweaver all day, its sweet. Not going to help you if you dont know any code though.

Id suggest mambo/joomla. May be a bit tricky to setup for a novice but once done you dont have to know any code.

Heaps of easy tutorials and examples on www.w3schools.com. HTML isn't that hard, and is very easy to learn using the above. Theres not too many structs to learn. Find out how to create tables, links, insert images, and format text and you've got enough to get started.

Another baseline coder! Yea meant to say, don't use Word or any other WYSIWYG text programme it'll try and change everything. Hell, if I can learn html anyone can

Frost, i'd definitely suggest having a read thru a few tutorials. You may find you'll get the hang of it really quickly.

fark i love it !!!!!! after reading you post i checked it out....how simple to use ........ive tried other shit as ive always wanted to make web pages etc.....but i have no idea what html even stands for letalone what it is/does.....its all greek to me but that program rocks for the pc noob 8)

Bit OT but dreamweaver is far superior to notepad (if you had to use straight text editor, scintilla is even better than notpad). DW dosnt do anything to my code format. I only use it in code view. The design view can get all screwed up.

If you plan on going 'behind the scenes' and playing with the code then DO NOT use word, frontpage etc as you will give yourself a headache trying to decipher all the extra crap code that they add.

Dreamweaver can have its moments, so I tend to stay away from it and write everything by hand. I use a programmers text editor called Context which i find is prety handy. It highlights code etc and has tabbed viewing which is prety sweet
