2mbps ADSL is nothing in Hong Kong. 1GBps!!!

""1Gbps broadband rolled out in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Broadband Network has launched a new ultra fast service. The symmetric 1Gbps service costs approximately £112 per month, but obliterates the kind of speeds we are used to in the UK. We are eagerly waiting for the rollout of an 8Mbps service and consider that to be fast.

While this kind of speed is unlikely to be available in the UK for some time, the possibilities for its use are immense. Large publishers could offer direct download services for their games, online gaming could be revolutionised and TV channels could be streamed at MPEG-2 DVD quality. It is hard to actually imagine speeds reaching 1Gbps in the UK, but we can dream.

this will set off a revolution if you ask me. imagine all the video shops going out of business, or going digital. games, movies all stream instantly. games like world of warcraft etc will be standard for new multiplayer games. all the netcafe's will get shut down cause its faster then lan. you can share with the whole world as if there is a one huge HD. New consoles probaly just come with a high speed modem and have a account that you can play games without having to go out and buy. this is just some of the things that went thru my head, and only if it goes mainstream.

    Err... no.
Most decent lans these days are 1gb anyway, and there's still less latency over a local network... 1 hop > 5 hops

Our work lan is 2gb Playing UT during slow periods =

As for getting this in NZ any time soon....

the truth is, the internet cafes would be better off shutting down, maybe not totally based on speed, but the last few years has seen a huge number of netcafes go bust in places such as Hong Kong etc, because many home users with high speed netacess and at times better machines no longer have a need for netcafes. I do think netcafes will be around for the simple reason that people dont always have full access to the net when out of the home, though that is changing pretty quick, even with old technologies like woosh, and new intel centrino integration which is already doing wonders.

I haven't been able to max out my gbps network, can only manage 60% - Hard drive is too slow (And I got a striped raid ).

Seems a bit overkill really, but meh, i'd get it if I could.

I don't really see it killing netcafes at all..

the problem with xtras 2mbit plan is that you can go through your whole 10gig in one day.. i went through 8 in two and that was without the computer on 24/7.... really xtra need to rethink the amount up to maybe 20gig and still have the same amount as the cost..

    but that will never happen....
