Last time the cops did this, they got bottled. Hence the riot gear. Show of force is a pretty good way to stop the fuckwittery that usually surfaces when these sort of cruises happen.

god no, people need to stop sharing this around, its embarresing.

Its obvious, the police would have been aware it was happening and as soon as one phone call came through complaining (which would have taken 2 seconds due to the volume of people plus drinking) they would have been there.

it dosnt take a nobel prize winner to figure out that it was a recipie for disastor..poor execution on the police part however and I'll never quite understand the videoing of them (done by police) but it was always gonna be a fail so who cares.

Storm in a tea cup and the legal expert holding the camera thinks he knows it all.

At the end of the day boy racers are getting discriminated against. Fuck I wonder why that it is? Maybe it's because because a percentage of them do have illegal mods and take part in illegal activities. And mum and dad I their standard ford territory don't...

I wish he'd stop making a fuss about this 'charity cruise'. If he is trying to do the right thing and have everything legit and no nasty surprises common sense says talk to the police and council about your plans and the best way to make it a safe event for themselves and the public - then you might not get your 'OMG rights breached and discrimination'.

    Big fuss over nothing!

Funny in Auckland we can have very large meets and have the police come along and offer support. All it takes is some planning and common sense.

    Re: police block in

Yep I know the guy who organised it all. He's had the cops round at his place three times in the week leading up to the cruise. I also know one of the cops who was there on the night so have heard things from both sides.

The cops used it as a chance to take a shit load of defect cars off the road in one go. Riot Police were used because of the potential for trouble - once someone throws a bottle then it's all on (it's happened before). Vehicle Inspectors & Court Balifs were there too.

I think the way they went about it caused all the trouble. Some people were detained from 6pm till well after midnight. If they were going have that many cars stopped then they needed to have a lot more cops to speed things up a little bit.

People also complained about the attitude of the Police. From reports everyone was sweet, the cops came in a bit heavy handed and turned the mood sour. I wasn't there however so can't confirm that.

Altho I'm not defending the "boy racers" one bit. People know the public/police opinion of Chch's car crowed and if you turn up to a massive cruise in this city, you can't expect this shit not to happen.

This is just one obviously arrogant persons opinion of what happened, surely there are a few more sides to the story? What an idiot.

    Re: police block in

Nobody can comment until the actions of the Police have been reviewed. There are good and bad aspects to both sides involved. The Police cannot regularly hold people on a spot without just cause for an extended period like they did, however who knows what rights the 'boyracer' laws granted. The meet itself had no permissions to be on the land it did, 'public' land or not you simply cannot do that with so many people involved, however a number of people on the cruise were under the impression everything was legit... nek minit, blocked in by Police and held for up to 7 hours (unlike how some portray it as them all being held for that amount of time). Apparently they took a heavy handed approach with everyone, and that's what resulted in the huge uproar...

There were certainly some idiots there, but there were also people such as many of us here attending too. Regardless, anything of such nature falls under the boyracer umbrella in Christchurch, and given their massive unpopular reputation, if you choose to attend cruises like this then you need to accept you'll more than likely be hassled by the Police.

I think it's seriously unprofessional of NZPC to have this on their site.

    Re: police block in

I dont see why the police have to explain their actions to anyone.

They showed up, took heaps of illegals cars off the road, all innocent people were let on their way, no issue.

If people didnt continue to drive around in illegal cars and without licenses then the police wouldnt have to do this.

hmmm, maybe now a little over the top.

If this was done just to take cars off the road then I say If it was done to control a gathering of a large crowd some of which consuming alcohol then

Nykon I was too suprised NZPC had this on their site but by the same token maybe its about time the one media voice young people and cars have is actually behind them rather than saying nothing ??

That's where the issue is, because they weren't. There have been a number of people who were in legal cars, not breaking any rules, and were under the impression the cruise was legit. They were held for a long time, and even upon requesting to the officers to leave the 'cordon' to use the bathroom they weren't allowed... therefore some were sub-sequentially arrested for public urination or leaving their car when told not to do so (Castle St tactics). I fully support taking all the illegal cars off the road and charging idiotic drivers, and even the idea of blocking all the cars in the cordon because it's not so easy to judge cars by the eye, but to disallow people who clearly needed to leave the area to do so is a blatant violation of the human right of freedom of movement.

Yeh the not allowing people access to the toilet is pretty heavy handed and overbearing, no matter what has happened in the past between these 2 groups, basic human rights shouldn't be waived just because they are a minority group who the public doesn't like. Imagine if it happened to another minority group instead of boy racers, the uproar would be immense.

And now they're trying to get all those who participated to go and make a complaint to the police oversight people.

I sort of think the police had the right idea but they executed it very badly and are probably now going to get a fair amount of trouble for it.

    Re: police block in

I think you'd have to be pretty naive to think that this was going to end in any other way than a bust. To be honest if you are all legit and go to such a "cruise" you should probably leave once the first munters show up and start doing skids, because it becomes obvious how it's going to go.

On the flipside, the carpet-bombing tactics by the cops appears a little heavy handed. How hard would it have been to quickly identify the troublemakers and the more unroadworthy cars and let the others go. It's been badly handled by the cops and I think someone in the force might get their knuckles rapped for this, since it's not the sort of publicity they want. Mind you, in Christchurch, this is how the general public like to see boyracer scum* dealt with.

    Re: police block in

I wasn't there so can't comment too much, but given the quantity of cars involved, is the time frame involved really that out there if the cops were checking to see that everyone was legit. The way I see it, they can't possibly have made calls on who was and who wasn't without blocking everyone in and keeping them while they went about their business. The not letting people piss is BS but realistically, we all know how these events are going to end up, especially in CHCH, and if you want to join in knowing full well that there will be these munters in their illegal cars, you have to be prepared to be tarred with the same brush. Standard case of minority ruining it for the majority but come on people, what were you expecting?

Sheesh man what ever happened to people working together, Police dont really care, "Boy-racers" dont care, if it was organised in the proper manner it may have not gone down like this. I agree the kid behind the lense was a bit of a muppet but all in all its easy to see how he/they got so pissed about the cordon. Theres also clear evidence that there were laws broken by the rozzas as far as human rights go, but if they let one piss, the whole crowd would take it as their chance to all dissapear. If I had turned up for this, alarm bells would ring as soon as someone blasts their wastegate or knumpties turn up with booze and loiter.... Id be off
