Modified Thai fight? Is that a Novice fight or an Amateur fight or?Just curious. I used to do Muay Thai for a bit longer then a year, finished before i got into the ring though

it was amateur.. so 10ounce gloves, full clench rules, knees to head permitted but no elbows.

Good shit, where do you train?
i train at FI-G in dunedin
Fully respect Muay Thai fighters. Went to an MMA event last year which had a few MT fights and tbh, the fighters looked more like fighters compared to a lot of the MMA guys. MT fighters were all ripped and conditioned to take a lot of punishment. The striking was amazing. Reckon they could make the transition to MMA after learning other aspects like wrestling, bjj, etc.
I have done a few stints of Muay Thai training, mainly as extra training as I felt we didn't get enough "physical" training in the karate I did (effectively the same club that did Muay Thai training) - especially heading up to gradings where you'd need to do as much as 10 rounds of contact sparring.
My flatmate at the time I was most into it did both as well and had a reasonable stint in the ring with Muay Thai almost managed to talk me into trying a fight, but around then we had a visitor to the club for a little while from Thailand who I had the joy of being partnered up for a bit and had some interesting conversations with - basically he was a fighter in Thailand, where they did full elbows and knees etc and what a lot of people here (at least at the time) would call fully crazy... but his view was that WE were crazy.
Reason being, is for him (and most in Thailand, apparently) Muay Thai was a professional thing - it was actually a way of making money, any fight he was involved with was worthwhile.... while he found it mind boggling here that people did it as a hobby. Seemed like a fairly good point to me, the one of the big reasons I got involved with martial arts as a kid was I wanted to avoid getting my ass kicked, seemed counter intuitive going and looking for chances to get my ass kicked![]()
I love the sport, and loved training, but apparently (and I admit being a hypocrit, as I love watching it) too much of a hippy to intentionally put myself in harms way and also rather not beat the shit out of someone else either, unless its actually NEEDED.

Yeah my trainer has had some pretty nasty injuries, he used to based out of thailand a wee while ago.
I wouldn't mind getting into MMA but our main thing in our gym is muay thai so I want to get a awesome standup before moving onto more bjj/wrestling
I think that's the reason i finished training, too much of a "hippy" to beat the shit out of someone else unless it's actually needed. *sigh* I loved training, have to get my arse in to gear to go back. I know that shit ain't easy though, especially after sitting on your arse for a year eating junk food hehe![]()
