    Phoneline over internet

    So moving to a new House within the next month, time to look at a new broadband plan...

    After a couple of google search I came up with Orcon Genuis
    http://www.orcon.net.nz/external/gen...FUcmpAod5E0hLg

    In Basic terms...

    $75 a month for a 30gb Plan plus Homephone (Over internet)

    Now where I am at the moment, we have been on a telecom plan for Donkey Years, and have been to lazy to actually check around for the cheapest, until now...

    So to the question part...Its all about the homephone over internet part...

    When someone is on the phone, am I right in assuming this uses bandwidth? (Which will create lag in my online gaming if we are both on it at the same time?

    Or when I am on the internet, and some1 rings in, does it disconnect my broadband? until they have finished their call? Disconnecting my game altogether !!!

    What are the downsides to phone over internet? Cause this plans sounds pretty good?..

    you wont get disconnected, you will just get a bit of lag, same as using skype while playing something and it will use some of your data

    I'd never EVER use Orcon after the extremely poor service my friends and I personally have received. And that's an understatement.

    Re: Phoneline over internet

    We've been using this since it came out (6 months ago?) and have had zero issues and customer service while setting up was faultless.
    Calls do NOT add to you data usage and I've neved experienced any noticeable lag in game while phone is being used.
    Range of the modem is good, we've got it in the middle of the house and it easily reaches both ends without much signal drop and downstairs in my workshop. Speed is also fine, I've never noticed any issues but I'll check exact speed when I get home if you want?

    Would recommend

    Re: Phoneline over internet

    2 guys at work have changed from orcon to slingshot due to bad service from orcon. One of the guys was getting overcharged 3 months in a row, and had to call them and spend 30mins on the phone to get it right each time, then continually charged him for another 2 months after he left, obviously a problem in there billing system but looks like they couldnt be bothered fixing it.

    Not major, broadband is the main reason, so not really? Is there better plans that you can get without phone-lines?

    All the naked dsl packages ive been seeing, are close to the same price?

    i was on slingshots naked dsl at 80 bux a month for 30 gigs , i just quit it as their other plans are like 2-300gigs if you have a phone line with them and for only 60 a month so its not really worth going naked DSL IMHO

    Telephone quality is about 8kHz (CD's are 44.1kHz), plus it will probably be compressed, so data usage will be extremely small.

    Pretty much the case. I'm only on a 5GB naked plan as my flatmates and I all use cellphones for calling, and I get a free +25gb/free youtube package from my ISP as my dad knows the owner, and work pays for it . There are better options out there.

    would not recommend slingshot. they used shared internet lines with other slingshot members , telecom you get your own dedicated line, this means the busy hours of when people use the internet , well this is my experience.

    For me at peak hour 3pm-11pm speed drops to 600-700kb/s out of peak hours its 2.3-2.4mb/s
    Mate mentioned above drops a bit more to 120-200kb/s for everything other then http and VOIP that drops to 600-700kb/s like mine. But his is downloading non-stop. Done 150gb so far this month no with no email/phone call from slingshot complaining. Will be interesting too see where the draw the line on the unlimited but its getting hard finding linux ISO's to download lol.

    Re: Phoneline over internet

    Slingshot = poor quality ADSL.
    TelstraClear = cable.

    But I see what you mean. The funny thing is, ISP's used to purchase data from upstream providers in usage blocks, i.e. 100TB or whatever they needed. It made sense to charge users based on how much they used. Now it's sold by speed, with no usage limitations. Talk to a lot of people in the USA, and to an extent even in Australia (where most people I know have caps in the region of 200GB/month) and the concept of a data cap is either unknown or laughed at. New Zealand's current ISP model is a joke.

    This...I was in the states and the net was incredibly fast, and no one new what I was talking about when I said, "Whats you data cap?"

    Re: Phoneline over internet

    I've been on slingshot since they binned bigtime. I went with a naked plan as you get a sip (VOI line as part of the package. With the sip line you get 500 free minutes to a bunch of countries as well as local and national calls.

    I run an asterisk pbx and the wife and I have bria on our iphones. Get full voicemail to e-mail and an press 1 to talk to etc for people dialling in. Been working solid for almost 2 years.

    Since the brought out the unlimited naked DSL we moved to that and regularly pull down 300GB a month with no issues with the sip line.

    The only real consideration is if you have a monitored alarm other than that there is no need for phone lines anymore.

    We have a Vodafone wireless home line ($25/month) and Telecom WiFi for interwebz, which isn't exactly speedy but it's free and we can't complain at only paying $25-26 per month for all home comms.
