Calling all computer geeks (computer issue)

I'm a bit of a computer geek myself but can't seem to fix this issue I have.

Yesterday I turn on my computer to find an error poping up when I opened one of my programs. I ignored it as when I clicked "OK" the error disappeared and the program opened anyway. I turned it on today with the same error appearing every time I open a new program.
It seems like that this virus/error has affected all the .exe files on my computer.

It's not really affecting anything but is VERY annoying as the error appears every time I open a new program.

I googled it and the first results ask me to install a free application and run the scan. I've done this but it hasn't fixed the issue.

The only security/protection programs I run is the free edition of AVG and free version of Advance System Care.

Just wondering if anyone has come across this before? If so then how do you fix it? Or do I have to buy and install a proper internet security program to fix this?

The error message that appears is:
"The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\0035.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette"

The only article I found online is this one:
Bad image message pop up every time I tried to run an application - Safer-Networking Forums

But that looks way complicated. PLEASE HELP!!!???!?!?!?!!!

I'd rather not do that. I'm haven't formatted/re-installed Windows for over 4 years. Also everything is wireless/bluetooth and I remember when I first got my computer that it took me forever to figure out how to get everything working.

It's malware, 0035 is just a randomised filename. Download MalwareBytes and run it. Antivirus, in all honsety, is down the list in terms of attack prevention effectiveness... you will have downloaded something that you shouldn't have either directly, or through drive-by download.

If that doesn't resolve things, then we can look through your registry for entries calling that DLL. Until then, just run a MWB scan and reboot.

Remove Advanced System care and AVG and installed MS Security Essentials and run MBAM as mentioned by Chris, go from there.

I second this, I personally use MSE and MBAM myself. Although if you're running MSE just get the free version of MBAM since you don't want 2 real time anti virus/malware programs running at the same time. I use MSE as my default antivirus that's always active and I scan manually with MBAM free edition once a week.

Try running regedit (windows key + R, regedit.exe) and searching for the filename. If there are any entries for it, delete them and reboot. I'm quite surprised MalwareBytes didn't pick it up.

Re: Calling all computer geeks (computer issue)

I did that and it didn't find anything. I searched for 0035 at first and it came up with this:
{ABE40035-27C3-4A2F-8153-6624471608AF} that had sub folders but then when I typed in the extension with the filename 0035.dll it didn't find anything

Avast has a terrible detection rate, and heuristic abilities, compared to say... Microsoft Security Essentials or Comodo. For a recent work-related project on AV evasion, Avast and a lot of commonly used ones (AVG, NOD32, Norton, Panda, etc) all failed to detect the trojan I created. Considering MSE is free and extremely common, it was quite a surprise it did so well.

whenever i have seen a almost not working laptop or computer boot scan with avast always worked for me.

Re: Calling all computer geeks (computer issue)

also try, using selective startup items,

start "run", type msconfig, in the first tab of msconfig select diagnostic startup hit ok and reboot see if the problem is still there, if it dissapears then look at the startup tab or services tab in msconfig and have a look at something that looks fishy.

otherwise i think a Format reinstall is looking like your best option.

Re: Calling all computer geeks (computer issue)

LOLOLOL Vikas you're the man, I couldn't even find the article you searched for on google but it was as easy as:

1. Click Start, click Run, type %Windir%\system32, and then click OK.
Note %Windir% represents the path of the Windows system folder. Typically, C:\Windows is the path of the Windows system folder.
2. Right-click the schannel.dll file, and then click Rename.
3. Type schannel.dll.old, and then press ENTER.
4. Restart the computer.

Sorted out the problem

Quick hijack of this geek thread now that the original issue has been solved

I want to add some RAM to my computer. I've established it takes ddr2. But can I check what mhz the ram is that's currently in there? Does it matter? Or can I just buy whatever mhz and chuck it in there?

Open up the memory slot under it, there'll be a sticker on the stick stating exactly the spec it is. You must have identical sticks in there, some laptops throw a spaz if you don't...

What laptop is it? Most mainstream laptops will be OK with decent quality RAM, also if it takes DDR2 667 you can most likely put DDR2 800mhz in it and it will just slow down to the speed of the other stick

or download software SIW install and run it. Go to the memory tab on left side and it will tell you what you have and what can be supported.
