    B18cr - Upgrading cams

I am looking at changing the cams in my b18cr and would like to know what other people recommend.

Currently my setup is quite standard, with the normal I/H/E already done. Was tuned @ 140kw but would
like to see what i can get it up to

Although i'm planning on taking it to the tack, I will still be using vehicle on the road so need to keep the driveability...

I have been looking at stage 2 Skunk2 cams lately, but am definitely open to suggestions!

I'm sure theres plenty of you who have done similar upgrades so let me know what you did and also what sort of gains you were able to achieve

Depends are you going to be upping the compression or just keeping it standard?

Buddy club 3+'s are quiet good on stock compression

The Skunk2 Pro1 (they're around a Stage 2 cam) are better then the normal S2S2 cams and have been proven to work well on ITR factory compression, likewise Buddy Club Spec 4's (they're a stage 2 as well).

If you want to give the compresion a slight bump just chuck some flat bottom valves in and a thinner head gasket - but then again shotting for high compression isn't always essnetial or benefficial, depends who you talk to .

What have you been tuning with?

Tuned with Hondata s300 through STM. Thanks for the different options so far! Definitely gives me something to look into. At this stage, i am probally keeping stock compression, this could change though so open to ideas!

    No problem.

Have a read of this: VTEC Camshafts Specs / Comparison for Honda B series Engines - EK9.org JDM EK9 Honda Civic Type R Forum .

It'll hopefully give you an idea of what the cam specs mean and what to aim for with your engine. This is only just scratching the surface (there are many things that can be taken into consideration). I found the more I researched cams, 4 stroke engine theory, rod stroke ratios, head designs etc etc the harder the decision became. Its one of those things that the more you know the more you realise you dont know and then need to know!

Have a look around HT dyno threads to give you an idea of things. Results tend to be quite mixed over there and ofcourse you cant use it as a direct comparison (fuel is quite different etc), but its good to see what others are running .

also be aware that you may require uprated valve springs etc for a significant cam upgrade..
tyson, have you got any good links for the articles regarding cams? i.e rod-stroke ratio, chamber design etc? id be quite keen to have a look!!

Its one of those things you have to search pretty deep on HT threads where every now and then you get a good thread with a few genuine old school experts, I think Endyn has a few good articles on his site and the rest of 4 stroke theory are found in good old fashion books .

Joule and I have been making a spreadsheet with all kinds of rod/stroke ratios etc of all the engines to help decide what the limits will be when making a more custom engine. Helping to decide on the max mean piston speeds.

But for cams jono, Endyn is the place to search, they have by far the best performance tips and tricks rather than searching 400034897423509234 pages through HT

wheels, you cant measure flywheel power with out removing the engine and putting it on an engine dyno.

so pretty much every dyno out there is wheel/hub horsepower. and even though a dynapac will say flywheel on the sheet its actually at the hubs
