Thread: H2B Sump design

Hi there,

Looking into the near future to get a sump custom fabricated. Reason behind it is that Kaizenspeed stopped production on their sumps, and it would be the cherry on the cake to not replace my sump ever couple months....

Has anybody has any experience with this? Any design considerations I should investigate before I start?

The plan is to pretty much get a cnc plate made of the bottom of the sump, then mock up the rest with cardboard based on space requirements and other designs from the current sump + baffle plate etc and space for extra oil. From there get the final measurements and get it made up by an engineer.

Please give me feedback, first time I'm doing this...

might want to put up what motor and chassis combo so people can give you a better indication and ideas

I knew . Would be easy with the cardboard mock-up if you know your intended internal volume dimensions, especially cos the factory one is going to be on the mean piss angle.

Is bigger volumetric sizing better? Or are you better to keep the factory sized capacity? Would a heatsink on the bottom help cool oil temp or is a waste of time?

I cant see any need to retain the original volume however a baffle should be mandatory...as long as you have oil pressure volume would be irrelevant no ??

*edit* actually for better wording..... the amount of oil between full and empty on the dipstick is one litre-ish so you could easily get away with removing that much volume in theory.

Yeah sure, baffling would be one of the prerequisites of a new sump.

I'd actually prefer to run more oil, there's no point in risking oil starvation becasue of wanting to save some space. Looking at what Built4Speed did on his evo2 was quite a good idea... Found a pic

Obviously it would look a little more fancy becasue it would be from scratch...

But I would try build one from a pre-existing sump to start with, would make life lots more easy...

So something like this? Just sketched this up.

thats what the baffle is for...in any sense I am looking at doing this also (wishes hadnt just throwen away spare sump ) and I was just planning to work out the volume of the drop in the sump...shorten it xxx amount so oil volume loss was only around 500mls (more if that wasnt short enough) and then just baffle/shorten pickup and away I go.

Having said that my car wont ever see the track so its kinda meh

Chris, thats what the current H22 sump looks like, need to make one that is flat with teh engine as much as possible. Engine leans forward in H2B, unlike backwards in normal h22 setup. Somelike like 50 degrees of difference?

But then won't the bottom edge sit real low? Wouldn't having it parallel with the road give you more clearance.

Did you not like kaizenspeed sump?

They don't sell it anymore, read the first post. I think Geoff wants something similar made up.

right, and where is the oil pickup suppose to go?


you need to make sure that the oil pickup will always be in oil, so needs to be at the lowest point in the pan, also you could make the pan slope slightly towards where the pickup is to help oil drain back to the pickup. You could add a baffle into the pickup area. id make it no more than 5L due to having to do an oil change and oil coming in 4-5L packs.

need to take into account where the exhaust runs and if anything else will get in the way not to mention ground clearance.

Buy Aluminum aftermarket sump, get some one to modify it. Result.

Or hack the stock on up?

I'm guessing he couldn't get enough people to do a group buy. And without the discount its not economically rational to purchase. Not all of us are as balla as you, and have cash to chuck around.
