(I'm not on the forum you linked to)
My work wagon is wrapped, was done over 2 years ago. The vinyl isn't very tough so don't expect things to slide or bounce off it without damaging it. It has faded somewhat on the flat surfaces(bonnet and roof)as it wasn't garaged. Talk to applier about any fading or UV warranty.
The price mentioned on that forum should be about right for a simple colour($2.5k). I paid $3k total for wrap and work decals. One week drive in/out.
I wrapped by EK9 myself for under $200, and then had the bumpers painted to match, lasted years in the sun etc.
The surface must be mint though, otherwise it'll end up being a bit rough as every blemish on the surface will show through the vinyl. I reckon if I did it again it would turn out differently when I applied the lessons I learned doing in the first time. The car is painted now however.
There's a place in Auckland (one of NZH's sponsors in fact) that will paint your whole car for under $2000 if you ask nicely enough!

I've always wondered how much all the vinyl weighs, any ideas?
Also how does it stand up to some of the cleaners around? Any special care instructions?

Yeah because you have lots of experience with vinyl, right?
The grade of vinyl you use to wrap the car (measured in years generally) has a great deal to do with whether or not a certain vinyl will fade. Regardless of the colour, if you use shitty vinyl or a type of vinyl not suitable for exterior use it will crack and fade.
My vinyl didn't fade because it was the same shit the US military uses on its planes and submarines for call sign designation.

My signwriter gave me a can of a product called "Plexus". It's found in Motorbike shops and used to clean helmet visors. Polishes up vinyl wrap reeeeal nice and easy too. Ive done the car twice with a little left in the can.
Otherwise most normal car washes are fine, I've used Mothers "California wash" for years but just swapped to some Pacer grape wash.
My wrap has faded on the roof and bonnet. The car was parked outside 24/7 since the wrap was done so if you garage it, likely there won't be an issue. The signwriter has been following this up with 3M.

Just to clarify here guys I know that the title I gave the thread was vinyl wrapping but vinyl can also just be used to add dimension to your mono-tone colour race car.
Series stickers are well and good but some nice stripes/ dots/ designs etc etc really make a race car pop. Plus you can easiil get super funky colours if you want.
First 2 cars already under way for vinyl designs.
Expect to see these around NI tracks in the near future.
You will be wasting money using car cleaners to clean vinyl not to mention it will reduce the life of the vinyl.
Wet cloth and wipe thats it!! if there are bird drops or something else just water it and wipe, vinyl does not need any special products to clean, that ONE of the good things to have vinyl wrap, you save money on cleaning products, I have a wrapped car it takes 5 min to clean the body, and then just clean the wheels, your done!
Regarding the weight:
Vinyl is very very light, most vinyls for wraps are 8 microns.
Well, funnily enough I've had some good results washing with normal products then drying the car with a soft towel. It was only very recently I tried anything special to finish it off(Plexus etc)
Mothers California wash was excellent. Pacers "Grape wash" is very good too, thats what I'm currently using.
BNT got a new product in last week made by Lucas. It's a speed wax/spray detailer that is applied to the car wet or dry. I've done the wagon with it twice now and it's cheaper than the Plexus product, easier to use and the results are very promising. It's not magically going to make the roof or bonnet shiny again but the panels are all smooth and slippery, water beads off and road dust doesn't stick to the cars bum.
Rate it!
signie here in tauranga does wraps, in 7year vinyl, and was very cheap. i got them to do the roof of my teg just for giggles, with art work, and it was only $100.00
whole car was roughly under a grand from memory, just because of extra labour time.
