GoPro in car project for Motul HondaCup

We will be running hopefully three GoPros (I want to stick to these as they will all use the same SD cards etc etc) and hopefully we will have a list of links after each race on the HondaCup web site (and I guess here too..) with the videos on. Hoping these will be a bit longer and a bit better quality than your average YouTube. The idea will be to rotate the cameras so there is in car from lots of competitors as the series progresses. We will also have in car branding for Motul at least, so that would have to go on the passenger side dash board if your car has any of that left!!

I have a GoPro but wondered who else who is competing might have one and would be willing to share their coverage or use an SD card provided by us to record races? I will take these away after every race and provide them at the next ones.

Also, we may look at a group buy if there is enough interest to achieve the same if there are not enough existing GoPros out there. Realise there are various GoPro models but I think the first step would be to assess if if we had enough of a group for a group buy before looking at what products we might break down that group into. Send me a message or post here.

Any IT nerdies who want to take it on are more than welcome!!!

I have the wide angle (which is a bit too wide really) but not the HD version. Can't see the point just for computer screen stuff. ideally I think we would just want to have the basic ones in there which are the cheapest ones, but obviously if three people with HD cameras are happy to be involved then....

I am glad you bought this up. Gecko and myself are gopro enthusiasts when it comes to what they can do and what they can't. This is right up my alley and if you want any advice then fire away.

Firstly the wide angle hero's are shite. HD motorsport kit + roll cage mounts are the way to go.

Also, multi-camera in one car is more entertaining too. I have 2 and will mount them in the same place but one forward, one backward. Then editing them afterward. You can mount extra cameras externally to get fancier shots and have the viewer feel included in the action rather than being a spectator.

Re: GoPro in car project for Motul HondaCup

    Ok.

Various ways to do it. You got a GoPro? Roll cage mounts for the inside. Or the suction cup mounts for glass, not perpex/lexan, or body panels. Curved 3m mounts for helmet.

Where to buy? GoPro Official Store: Wearable Digital Cameras for Sports

If you want it now, then visionup. Otherwise, the States. Cheaper by far.

Ok guys it looks like i need some help to get some footage up on you tube from my newly installed gopro HD. I have just edited and saved the vid on VLC. (media player would only play it in a jerky pic).

When trying to upload it to youtube it takes 10 mins to load 3% and then gives up. It is 1.08gb. Any ideas? or could my putt putt vodafone broadband be the prob

    Cheers

You should be saving it as an AVI. What did you use to edit it with?

    Hey Ant,

Why don'y you use the GoPro supplied software off their site?
I think you can choose file quality for sizing.

What's the best software to use with these? - haven't heard many positive comments about the software that comes with these units.

Re: GoPro in car project for Motul HondaCup

Initially I was using iMovie and then moved on to Adobe Premiere Pro but unless you are shooting, sequencing and compiling a million things then those 2 programs are an overkill, and expensive.

Have heard that Quicktime Pro can cut and edit. Have yet to have a go. But will do and let you know.

I've just got Cyberlink Power Director which is supposed to be pretty good.

Haven't got any decent videos on my Go Pro yet though so haven't really tested the software.

Premiere Pro is decent for something not too badly priced and off the shelf.

Final cut pro or even Avid are the way to go if you're dead serious but lets be honest. For this sort of thing its all simply over kill. You basically just want to chop and move things which nearly any old program will do so just choose something with a nice easy to follow system .

I'm happy to help anyone with this sort of thing where possible. Have done a good 4 years working on some smaller projects and a couple of TVNZ6 and some current affairs shows etc.

I look forward to seeing the coverage.

Re: GoPro in car project for Motul HondaCup

i dont know what all the fuss is about. progrms mentioned are great, but if for the purpose of editing onboard footage then its very simple
the gopro cineform software is very easy to use. import straight from the camera, find the in and out points of where you want the video, make a clip from the selected aread and click convert and it saves as avi which is perfect mix of quality and saves it into your my videos folder ready for upload.
    its quick and free
if anyone has issues with it and wants some help, feel free to let me know - even happy to convert them for people if need be. it takes less than 5 mins to convert a race on my lil slow laptop

You must be confusing Premiere Pro with Premiere Elements. Because Premiere Pro CS4 or CS5 are not cheap. If in and out points are all your after then Paddy sounds like he has a winner.

Look up the price of Avid and Final cut pro for a full commercial setup and you'll see that Premiere Pro is cheap.

Adobe deal cheap prices through uni's which is good. I've got it on my home computer because it was extremely good value.

Thats nethier here nor there though. Plenty of free editors that will do the job.

I have 4 GoPro's here. Am keen to rent them out or whatever if you are interested in getting more spread of the field or want to multi camera certain cars.
