Can someone confirm if this is the right way to adjust Tein Flex?

Im looking for the right way to height adjust my coilovers. I have a set of Tein Flex on the car at the moment.

There is mixed information on the internet. Some people say you unlock the bottom ring and then change the height by changing the spring load by spinning the top ring. Others say to just loosen the bottom ring and turn the threaded part of the shock, like this guy has done:

    https://sites.google.com/site/redcap...lex-adjustment

But people say adjusting it by turning the shock body will damage the shock itself...so i have no idea.

The tein website is useless as it doesnt tell you what to adjust exactly. Has anyone had experience with these coilovers and be able to help me out?

    Thanks!

you wont damage the shock body.

you make sure the upper most ring is tight against the lower top ring (locked together)
you then loosen the bottom ring then you put your c spanner on the top ring to go down or the lower top ring to go up.
the whole body of the shock should turn when you rotate one of the rings. when you are done tighten the bottom ring hard against the lower mount

You should never move the top ring when its not locked as this will adjust the preload on the springs (unless this is what you are trying to do) as this can cause differences in spring force side to side and can potentially lead to premature wearing out of the shocks.

    hope that makes sense

just a side note, when you install the shocks you should tighten the spring pearch till it contacts the bottom of the shock then go aproximatly 1 turn more to put slight tension on the spring and to stop it from moving. you should also measure the distance from the pearch to the tophat to make sure the shock on the other side has the same measurement (ie same preload).

then using a ruler make sure the gap between the upper and lower rings is the same on each side of the vehicle.
1mm of adjustment = 1mm lower the car will sit.

    that one is pretty good

Thanks for that, so when you say once the bottom ring is loosen i then put the spanner on the top or middle ring, do i have to actually physically turn those rings, or just put the spanner on it and then turn the threaded part of the shock?

because the 2 rings have been tightened into one another they wont spin, the whole body of the shock will spin as shown in the video. they dont physically move on the shock, the whole shock winds down into the mount at the bottom

1mm of gap = 1mm of height only applies if the shock is perfectly straight up n down.

usually its a ratio of about 1:1.3

so lower spring by 10mm and you'll adjust height of car by 13mm... roughly.

this is due to most japanese shock/spring being on a slight angle.

but you dont lower the spring at all. you lower the whole body of the shock.

Most honda are pretty much vertical

I cant see how the angle makes a difference care to explain how it makes the ratio of 1:what ever?

the body of the shock is 10mm lower the car will be 10mm lower

It's due to unequal triangles Jase. The ratio of the length from inner pivot to shock base to length of inner pivot to bottom ball joint. It's about 1:1.3. So shorten the length of the shock body (using the bottom mount like on the Teins) by 10mm and the change at the lower ball joint (centreish point of the wheel) is 13mm.

Does that sort of make sense?

Oh this really only applies to the front, rear is close enough to 1:1
