Isnt this illegal...so obviously done over trademe....been a few uncompilable evo's on there and sti's which have been registered as MX Lancers and Imprezas SRX's etc. Really just as easy as swapping them over, I guess its a far cheaper alternative. what do you guys think/know of it?

its not that simple....well it is to cruize around but to onsell the vehicle you would have to find a proper tard (say for an evo with MX lancer plates)
standard cars are easier for people to do these things with.

cutting the chassis/frame number out of one car and into another suggests by far a legal act. not sure what would happen if someone got caught though.
Yeah if you remember a while ago, there was a blue "evo 1" on trade me, white interior, plate was pmpnlo I think. that was a chop job, people used to question it, but he'd just ignore it, was a MX lancer, with a evo engine and had evo plates on it.....

cut out and tac in new chassis number, put the new plates on, rivet down the new chassis tag/s, slide new rego in. you're off.
Doing this to deceive someone or not informing them or just doing it with malicious intent is frowned upon.
I do not have an issue with people doing it on a doorment car...however doing it on a hot car is another kettle of fish all together.

Guy on my street did it for a living, Chopping up the vin, firewall, engine stamp, gearbox stamp and new plates. Little to say not long ago police were at his house and towed away alot of cars and I havnt heard from him since. He still has a few of my tools aswell.
He kept offering to make me up a fake cert plate lol, Not that I need one for my car.
I have heard of suspect cars having the firewalls exrayed to pick up the welds.
Dont know if thats actually true or not but it wouldnt surprise me if it was.

I know of an evo rally car that was brought un compliable and the person is now selling it with full registration and log book.
He reshelled his rolled rally car into the un compliable car and is flicking it off. Would piss me off if I brought a car only to find out later that the cops want to take it off me because it wasn't legit.
It is a crime and those doing it should get nailed.

I know several cars on the roads at the moment rocking dodgy chopped VIN tags, sad thing is three of them are also rocking AA or VTNZ warrants...obviously they don't check them that well

warrent inspectors are only required to check everything matches....not be policemen.
The only reason I agree with doing it to doorment cars (and only if it matches up) Is because I dont belive in deregistering a car........It is just a money grubbing scam IMO and there is no real need for cars to go doorment other than financial gain.
Yeah dude, I wouldnt buy anything off that trader. That E46 hes got on the 20's was up for sale last week with standard black BMW 17's for a dollar reserve - unfortunatley it was pulled because it got written off....
The fact hes openly displaying that he wants an evo with live plates is pretty much highlighting that this law is being ignored and that its more common then you'd think.

Oh and not long ago he was wanting WRX tags. thing is if you know someone who can import you cars like mid 90's sti's, type r's, evo's etc..and you have tags, you can make abit of money...
Hmmm a moral dilemma. I can see why an enthusaist would do it to an imported r32 gtr for example, and tbh I wouldn't frown upon it. But then selling said vehicle without disclosure would suck for the new owner. Plus I guess alot of car thieves do it. So overall I think its probably a good thing that its illegal.

Oh yeah for sure, I guess new emission laws affect alot of people who are just car nuts. But I dont like the idea of people, who are swapping tags, for profit. Some poor guys going to think hes got something legit when its not - that in itself could come back to bite you on ya ass, may get your head kicked in.
what if he has a spare motor etc and he wants a shell to throw into it...thats not illegal
although it appears that isnt the case for that particular trader lol, pretty blatant about it, you'd think trademe/police would do something about it

Re: that Evo listing, it isn't illegal to advertise for and buy a live but damaged Evo, so you can't do anything about that. However if you then put those car details on an uncompliable vehicle, that is illegal. So you can't get the ad yanked now, because what he is asking for isn't illegal. Can't really police 'what he might do' scenarios.
I have to laugh at people who sell vehicle ID's on trademe ... find all the ones you can, and I'm sure karma will catch up with them very rapidly and in unexpected ways.
