    Help Thread

Right, seeing as i have a little bit of spare time on my hands im thinking about doing a tech help thread for car maintenance related things. things like how to change you wheel bearings, remove bits and pieces off the car etc etc.

would require input from you guys/girls as to what you would want to see and id get the required info for the task at hand. and post it up in one thread in the tech help section, the thread would be indexed to make finding stuff reasonably easy.

Reason for this is, one im getting a little bored some days as this course is only taking up about 20h a week and theres not that much to do round San Diego on a tight budget and two im getting really sick of seeing so many people post up asking question about the same things over and over again, the info is all out there in a few different threads. so i thought maybe put it all into one thread.

    thoughts/comments/sugestions?

    Re: Help Thread

Hard out . Good threads would be...

    Cambelt
    Plugs
    Oil/Filter Change
    Shock Removal/Replacement
(As you said) Wheel Bearings F/R
    CV's/Boots

I'd say 70% of us on here know how to do these jobs, however sometimes (for me anyway) I forget one little bit of info or whatever, so a how-to would be rad.

EDIT: Yeah I should have said, as EFpowa did, I can offer some write ups with pics etc.

    Re: Help Thread

I've been wondering myself why there isnt a thread or a how to section under the Tech help part of the forum with helpfull information. I already have a lot of how-to write ups that I could provide.

yea i know the ones your talking about, from a few different sites round the net. the ones im planning will be strait out of the service manuals to make it quick and easy, and then at least i know theyre 100% correct

i will be asking you guys/girls to give input into what you in the thread, so it should end up pretty comprehensive

How to install a VTEC switch.
but on a serious note this would be a great idea and it would be good having a list of all the how to: threads stickied in tech section. get sick of the once a money, How do do b18c in eg threads etc.. then again the people who ask those sort of questions wouldnt bother to search for the how to thread anyway.

    Heres some ideas
    How to b18c into eg
    How to h22a in eg/dc2/domani
    How to coolant bypass
How to install dc2 dash into eg/ek
    How to build a lsvtec/b20vtec
Don't listen to what I say, I make shit up as I go.

I believe the idea is so people dont need to search. They just open the thread and its in their face

CV boot will be a good how to and maybe a break hub conversion (maybe drum to disc conv.) and A/C removal

Also i reckon it shouldnt just be in the toi thread, it should have its own thread stickied or have its own sub thingy

    Yeah would be extremely helpful...

    How to's

    -Brakes
-Even something as simple as oil changes
    -Engine removal/installation
-Gear box removal for clutch jobs etc
    -Dash removal?

    just a few ideas.
    Why ?

    Re: Help Thread

How-tos for basic maintenance would be good for some people I reckon - what to look out for (like thermostat @ 150kms, fuel & air filters, plugs, leads, oil, filter, tyres, paint & body work, blah blah), and how to perform each thing, how much it might cost etc.

    Some other ideas:
    - Installing a kill switch
    - Installing a water temp / oil temp guage
    - How to troubleshoot/fix rough idle (IACV valve etc)
    - How to fix a dodgy main fuel relay
    efsi: What's wrong with a 4AGE? They're good engines
spooner: They have a flat spot from 0 to 8000rpm.

Are you planning on colating and organising some of the articles off the net or starting from scratch and writing your own?

I reckon I have seen about 5 excelent articles already on the net for each of the topics mentioned so far...
I apologise but I seem to have misplaced all my Hondas...

great idea!!! I think the ideas posted are good, as todd said simple(for some) things like oil changes... we have to remember that not everyone is as compitant in mechanics

oh, and what else is there to do in america than write about cars
You think car racing is fun... try going down a river stuck in a plastic tube dodging rocks... even I ask myself why

To start with im just going to go from the Service manuals as theyre pretty strait forward and its all honda stuff and how they do it.

then down the track for things a little more adavanced i will find the articles on the net read through them and recompile them if needed

    Re: Help Thread

Or just add a different thread.

Skylines Australia has a forum called Tutorials / DIY / FAQ
when people do anything that they feel worthy of a thread, they post it up with relative pictures and descriptions.

They are hard core and generally start out with a description, heres an example.

HOWTO: RB25DET High Boost mode with standard solenoid

    Intended Audience: Stock RB25DET owners
    Technical Level: Very Easy
    Duration: 5 minutes
    Effort: Easy
    Result: Fairly Good

    !!!Caution/Achtung/Attenzione!!!
Follow this guide at your own risk. You have been warned. We are not responsible for any actions you take. The instructions contained herein are only a guide and should be done with caution, If you doubt see your local mechanic. If you are unsure or are not confident don't do it.

    Background:

As you all know the standard R33 RB25DET boost solenoid (value controller) is 5psi until rpm is greater than 4500rpm and then its 7-8psi. Continue reading if you wish to always be in high mode (7-8psi). If you have an aftermarket boost controller then you can stop reading now.

The standard solenoid has two wires running two it, one is constant power which is shared with the AAC value and some other components (see wiring diagram) the other is a ground signal. The ground signal (black wire) is run to the ECU. This wire is grounded when rpm is greater than 4500rpm by the factory ECU. Basically if you give the wire a constant ground instead of the ECU's above 4500rpm ground it will always be open, thus allowing it to be in high mode aka 7-8psi.

And then of course they go on with the details and photos. Theres hundreds, anything from stopping the door ajar beep, removing the speedo surround, to fitting a HKS Turbo Kit or remote mount oil cooler..

Fantasticly helpful, and members can post up their own etc.

I just feel that for most people that want to try it themselves, a description + pics helps alot.

Then they also have a Thread called General Maintenence. I think that pretty much explains itself. Guides to changing plugs/coils/oil etc etc.

Just a suggestion. Works pretty well IMHO.
