It's basically all down to hub speed. If you have a larger rolling diameter for the same hub speed, the car will be going faster (points further out on a radius are going faster than points nearer the hub). The speedo will read lower than the speed the car is going. On the other hand if you have a smaller rolling diameter tyre for hub speed, the speedo will read too high.

Finally cracked the 600km on a tank mark, but i was really pushing it as you can tell by me putting 43L in when i filled up. The fuel light first flickered on at Rangiriri and was on pretty steadily from Pokeno and i got to the cbd in Auckland then back to my place before filling up. 90ish km from when it first flicked on

    Model: 1993 Honda Civic
Engine: D15B Vtec civic hatch manual
    Engine Mods: Stock
    Fuel Type: BP 91
    Tank Size: 45L
    Driving style: 50/50 motorway/round town
    Petrol used: 43.1L
    KM traveled: 604km

    only 14.04 km/L or 7.12L/100km though

Should really fix the miss and get it street tuned

If Hondas up to 2001 still use distributors I stand corrected, I've only owned one Honda but my 89 mazda and 90 mitsi and the mid 90's toyotas I've owned have all had multi coil, wasted spark ignition systems taking inductive signals from the cam to generate a signal for spark timing and rev counter - given the cam rotational speed is different than engine rotational speed all the cars I've had since about 1990 have had some "working out" done to give RPM.

There isnt any "working out" as in ALL four stroke piston engines with camshafts the Camshafts turn at exactly Half the speed of the Crankshaft!! only time they dont is when you have a broken cambelt /cam chain.
The only "working out" to get RPM is Camshaft RPM X 2 = Engine Rpm. which is nothing like what you described above.

6.5 km/L (15.4L / 100km?) around town with a solid foot... probably should ease up a bit, not to mention it needs a service.

11.14l/100km round town, or 8.97km/l. Pretty awesome compared to what it used to get, which could be over 15l/100m. Haven't done an open road comparison yet.

That is the best and most accurate way to measure how much fuel you have used. yes your odometer might be out but your only comparing it to your own readings. other peoples readings are only indications and are to be taken with a grain of salf
I tried Jase's method above as to me it seems the most accurate. So filled up on sunday arvo to the neck of the filler with 98 at BP. Drove to work and back Monday till today Wednesday and did 93.1Km to the dot. Filled back up and it took 6.20 Litres excatly the same part of the neck.

1996 E39 528i 5 speed automatic, averaging 13.5L/100k around town the last 2 weeks (including a drive to Rolleston and back), worst economy observed, 14.1L/100k, I get stuck in a lot of traffic around town going to work and back now days due to many businesses from the CBD relocating to Addington, Riccarton, Middleton etc due to the quakes.
The economy doesn't bother me that much, its in my face on the onboard TV screen, which is the only reason I really take notice of it.

When I was using the Golf VR6 for work, (2.8L 4speed FWD VR6 automatic) i was averaging 11.8L/100k when I checked it.

Change of address has changed the traffic profile...no longer spending 2 hrs a night travelling 22kms. Now live just over 50km from town so a nice long round trip to work and back resulting in a car with 2 6ft plus adults and a kid in the car returning 5.5km/100km on 91 octane. Pretty happy with that since i now do 100km a day during the week and 200km every Sat --- WAY too much time in the car :-/

Hmm I want to work out the economy of the Turbo CRX, but i'll need to start driving it, this is my usage for the last 16 months or so
Reading, Km Date Source or reason Usage (avg), Km/day/year
    199,850 2012, February 21st WOF inspection 2.12/773
    199,485 2011, September 2nd WOF inspection 0.33/121
    199,484 2011, August 30th WOF inspection 1.72/626
    199,121 2011, January 31st WOF inspection
    199,121 2011, January 31st WOF inspection 0.76/275
    199,090 2010, December 21st WOF inspection 11.71/4,261

So oneday when I can start driving this beast I'll work it out, (damn quake damaged roads).

Hmm, filled my car up tonight. Two jobs+twice stuck in traffic = shitty economy.
7.99 L/100k for the last tank.

And on a side note. I've been keeping fuel stats for five years, and today is the second most expensive tank of 98. $2.33 per litre. Got to 2.34 in April last year.
