| Battery light, Door lights and boot light Coming on Recently my fluctuating idle has returned and with it came a few lights on the dash coming on (Battery light, door lights & boot light). When the lights go off the motor idles normally. The lights randomly come on at different times, sometimes stay on for a long period of time then just go off. I noticed that sometimes the lights go off under high rpm of when changing down gear. The dash backlight and headlights also get mildly dimmer when these dash lights come on. Any ideas guys? |

Location: Christchurch | Alternator is dead. Happened to mine 2 weeks ago. Battery voltage slowly drops... in my EF9 it dropped about .1v a day. If you give your car a good fang it drops even more... using your lights and stereo even more again. I ended up having to drive home from work at 10pm with no lights on, lucky I live close to work to have my car die at my driveway entry. |

Location: Christchurch | If the lights don't come on occassionally, probably means the brushes on the alternator are bung. They sometimes make good contact, sometimes don't. If they come on again, turn the car off and place a multimeter over the battery terminals, it should read around 12.2-12.5v. Turn the car on and place it across the terminals, should read about 14.4v-14.6v. If your alternator is stuffed it will be reading 12.5v or below. |

Location: Christchurch | Yep, the battery seems to charge itself up while the car if off. Starts fine and the brushes seem to make good contact, drive a while, turn it off... start it again and the lights come on and reads low voltage. Happened to me when my alternator went. I lasted for about a week with the issues, but in the end it just died. Best to get another alternator lined up asap aye man, just so you have it there for when yours dies completely.Check on Trademe. There is a DA6 being wrecked in Christchurch, he should hook ya up. 20bux is the going rate for them. |

| Got one sorted here for $50 which seemed alright as there aint stuff all honda parts around nelson. If i got one from chch i'd be looking at $20-30 freight so yeh. Plus it's off a mate so if it's no good i can get my $$ back. Is there a thread on removal and installation? It looks tight down there ![]() |

Location: Christchurch | Ummm... I'll try describe what I did the other week. Start by undoing the wire on top - fold back the rubber shroud and unbolt the tab off the bolt, 10mm I think. Then unclip the plug on the end. There will be two or three bolts around the outside of the alternator, 14 or 12mm I think. The top one you can get at from the top of the engine bay, just use a ratchet n' ring spanner, a spanner, or a ratchet with as shallow as possible socket (you may have to push some AC lines out of the way to get at it. Undo that. Then jack the car up and put it on jack stands - undo the other one or two bolts. There may also be a wire to undo underneath on the alternator housing, but I don't think so. If it doesn't lift straight off, spray a little degreaser or CRC on the bolts and jiggle it around to try get rid of any crap and free it up, then use a big flathead screwdriver to lever the alternator off the plate that it sits on. Once it is off and moving around freely, angle it so that the alternator belt slips off - then take the alternator out from the top of the engine bay. I have semi-tucked my injector loom, so if you haven't done so you might need to shift it around so you can pull the alternator out. As far as I remember, it doesn't come out the bottom... crossmember or axle clearance issues? Drop the new alternator in, pushing the loom around, then slip the belt on and slot it on, bolt it up, and adjust it so that it doesn't slip upon startup/running... should be nice and firm. Bolt the wires back on and plug the plug back in. |
