| my boyfriend has a casio one, it has a microphone on it so u can do movies with sound, and also a mp3 option. so u can have songs in the camera and listen to them thru some headphones that come with the camera. his i think was about 1000. i think its 2.5 megapixels... you need to buy a memory card at the same time though. my camera only holds 20 pics, and his, about the same i think... |

| Senior Member 7,000rpm (Peak Power) | go the canon ones they are awesome I have a Canon S45 and it is the shit!! Movie function is really good (nothing compared with digi video camera), the picture quality is amazing and it's easy to use. I think it was around the $1000 price range too, although it was selling for up to $1400 in some stores

Location: Dunedin | Sony is rubbish with digi cams. They are electronics company paying $$$ for fancy lens to give the impression of a good camera. Just the same with HP, Panasonic etc. Look for CANON, NIKON, FUJI there all good. The brands like canon dont boust about brand names on lenses etc, they concentraite on camera terms such as aperchea (?spelling) and F factor etc. PS, you only need 1.5Megapixels to get a 4x6" photo print in photo quality. 2MP will get you close to 5x11" 5MP will give you an A3 print 8O Megapixels mean very little with digicams once you get a certain amount. 2MP will do most, 3.2MP for enlarging prints. Then all you need is a Photo printer, which will play a bigger roll in quality of prints than the camera! Look at what the Canon i850 can do, or even the i950 8) CP-100 is sweet if you want just 4x6" prints

Location: Westport | Canon make elite cameras, full stop. http://www.shell.net.nz/random/images/canon/ Thats some random ones that i've taken, and not reduced in size in photoshop like I normally do. These are taken in medium settings, with a 32meg memory stick it can hold 52, on full its something like 12 ![]() The amount of features the G3 (what the above pics were taken on) have is insane, I wish I knew how to use it all ![]() Sony also make good cameras, I remember Akane showing me a few he had taken. What endles says has some truth in it of course, they ARE an electronics company, that are known for good electronics. Their CCD units are one of the best, and paying big money to get good lenses is the best way they can get good images. They have a good reputation for their Carl Zeus cameras. The mavicas were cool, but gave total shit photos...

Back when those Mavicas were common I used a Fuji MX-700 - it's outmoded now, but for the time took awesome pictures, was small and could hold heaps on an 8mb card. Plus you just slipped the card into a floppy disk sized adaptor and stuck it straight into your floppy drive - very convinient ![]() | |

| Senior Member 6,000rpm (Max Torque) | Sony rubbish? pfffft I dont think so. I have the Sony Cybershot, 2.0 Megapixles yada yada, short video, scenes, editing etc etc.. It's the best camera I found and am confident with any sony product... ------------------------------ Anyone with a Sony Headunit - you should have brought another brand because they are "rubbish".. Anyone with a HP computer, shame on you because they are "rubbish" .. haha sorry, me just being an ass... Ignore..------------------------------- Also have a HP desket, and Brother stylis 670... You wouldnt know the difference between a proper photo and one printed on either these... But I agree, if your serious about photos get a Canon which is why most Journalists use them but for an everyday photo happy person, sony (even if they do pay $$$$ for lenses ) or Fuji but I find that quality cameras are high in the price range, and a good soney one will set you back about $600-900..

| Senior Member 4,000rpm (Taxi Drag) | Ive been looking at getting a digicam too. Think im gonna get the Sony DSC-V1. Very small and stylie with exceptional quality photos. Bit pricey though. Between 1100 - 1500 depending on if you can get it wholesale. heres a good review of the above: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/so...ew/index.shtml Cannon is a good brand but in my opinion their cameras look gay. If your gonna spend upwards of a grand on a piece of electronic gadetry it kinda needs to look the part. They do have the advantage of using generic memory. Sony forces you to pay through the teeth for branded stuff.

Nikon uses a Sony CCD in their flagship D100 camera, so not too sure where you are coming from on that note ![]() Thats what it all comes down to with a digicam, the CCD. The CCD is what detects the light and determines picture quality. In consumer grade cameras, they use an interline transfer CCD, which uses electronic methods (that are waaay too technical to get into here) to determine colors etc. Because of this, only 30% of the CCD is effective pixel area, so a 3 megapixel camera is suddenly only outputting 1 megapixel. (Companies boast big numbers to look impressive) In prosumer/professional cameras, they will use a full frame CCD, which doesnt require all the electronic crap to determine light etc, and almost the entire CCD can be used (70-80 . The entire CCD buffer is shifted into memory where its processed as a RAW image. This is how a 2-3mpixel pro camera can give better shots than a consumer 4-5 mpixel. I currently have a Minolta DImage7Hi, which falls into the prosumer category, awesome camera ![]() Also have a Sony Mavica, one of those floppy disc based ones... Took advantage of their 'floppy disc adapter', which allows you to use Sony memory sticks with them. A 16mb card will suffice for space for over 200 images at 800x600. Sure it's slow and cumbersome, doesnt exactly look all that great, but it has battery life like you wouldnt believe, and does everything I want it to as a general camera. It all depends on what you want the camera for, if its general snaps, you dont need to look past 2mpixel, especially if you are going to put them online as you will (hopefully) resize and compress them with jpeg anyway. Try Parallel Imports Ltd on Paul Mathews Drive in Albany, significantly cheaper than retail ![]() [Edit] Just noticed you're in Welly... perhaps find a camera you like and then call them to see what price they can do it for ![]()

Location: Hastings | Just got a Sony DSCP92 (5megapixel) for $735.44. Just thought I'd share that. That's at some serious mate's rate's tho. It does everything I need it for and it seems solid enough. As for the HP computers being crap - it all depends on what scale you're looking at. Both NZ's EFTPOS networks (ETSL and EFTPOS NZ) run on HP Non Stop servers (previously known as Tandem Himalayas until HP bought them out), and the whole system is incredibly reliable - I can only think of one outage we've had in 5 years that was due to a failure on our machine, and that was cos we were waiting for our new machine to be built and were overclocking the Tandem. Availability for us was 99.999997% for the past 7 months, on a 24x7 basis. It helps when you've got a minimum of 6 CPUs and every CPU, disk, controller, and critical process has an active backup. And one can be yours for a few million. *coughGeekcough*

We just trashed two old Tandems last week but kept all the Tandem badges, so we've stuck them on some of our Compaq PCs just to piss them off.
