Exclamation TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

Transport Minister Annette King is defending new road charges saying they are minimal but truckies are furious at the changes and plan to clog city centres across the country tomorrow.

The nationwide protest which organisers have promised will see 1000 trucks in the centre of Auckland will disrupt commuters heading to work on Friday.
The trucks will be driven into the centre of cities between 7.30am and 9am in what trucking representatives say is the first national protest taken by the industry.

Re: TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

I think an increase in RUC is stupid. Helengrad already gets a decent tax slice off the (ever increasing) price of diesal as it is. Truckies will only increase their prices to offset this, which in turn means higher prices for consumers

Nice one Helen

Re: TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

As I said in the Truckers Corner thread...

While I think its great they're trying to reduce the traffic on out already-overcrowded road by using rail to transport freight, I think its absolute bullshit that at a time when people are struggling with fuel prices [and the cost of living in general] they put the RUC up by 7-10% and add a 2c/L ACC levy to petrol. There's no way the trucking companies can/will absorb that sort of increase so it will be passed on to the consumer. Higher food prices, higher pertrol prices (from the tax AND the increased delivery costs), more poverty, thanks a fucking lot Helen. I just hope National has the balls to stand up and say that its unacceptable and they'll cut it as soon as they're elected. Somehow I don't see it happening though...

YES!! May be the start of some major protest action, go the heavies.

About time this lazy-assed country got motivated and stuck it to these pricks. Feel free to disagree, but I'm backing the truckies

Family friends doing a trip around Europe at the moment said about Greece having this happen. But much more prolonged. The country ran dry of petrol as nobody was delivering it!

Re: TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

Just seen it on the front page of the press i guess it had ta happen sooner or later. People are pretty pissed off, seem's abit over the top though IMO why not just go on strike or whatever instead of just making it havoc for evryone, but then i dont drive a truck so fair enuff, suppose it'll make people take note of there protest abit better thata way too, at least there was a warning about it i think over in europe no one knew it was gonna happen.

Re: TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

My Dad told me this morning that the government takes over a dollar from each litre of petrol. That's fucking ridiculous - over 50% *Blinks*
I support what the truckies are trying to do... why don't we have a boy racer congregration in the CBD to protest the ever-rising petrol prices?
Haha talk about fish in a barrel

Re: TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

I think its great the industrie is taking action, the company I work for (Adams Group) are sending our trucks in to the mix The price of fuel went up $45,000 more last month alone on top of what we normally pay for fuel, then for the RUC's to go up without warning is disgusting

Grandparents told me about that yesterday, the economy is going crazy. Petrol in Greece is around $3.20NZD a litre. It amazed some of my cousins when i told them dad has a 4.4litre BMW. Over there 1.6l is huge. Majority of cars are around 1.3l.

Yea, petrol has even become a black market item... people selling it off at extortionate rates to those who desperately need it! Apparently tourists get it ok though, since they bring good money to the economy.

Ha cool! I don't understand how people can feel safe doing stuff like that with out a helmet. I've seen so many nasty accidents, both videos (here's a couple; 1 2) and in person, that it just feels scary.

But yeah, back on topic.
Is anyone leaving for work early? My other half leaves from Mt Wellington for Ponsonby at about 7am, will be interesting to see how much longer it takes...

Re: TOMORROW: Angry truckies to clog city streets

The increase in RUC actually doesn't surprise me. I'm not saying I agree with the increase happening, but given current events it just doesn't surprise me at all.

As far as I've been told, historically the Government used to own the rail network, and Road User Charges were introduced to protect their investment when diesel trucks became a viable and cost-effective alternative to shipping stuff by rail. So roll forward to the present day... the Government buys back our rail network, and Surprise!!
