TAX Refund..

Well the IRD has over $700 million worth of tax owed to NZ's and odds on most people dont even know it. I checked mine tonight and I'm owed just over $500 sweeeeett!!

Here's an easy way to do it online...

You must have a years earning from your employer 1/4/07 to 31/3/08 Showing gross earnings and PAYE, Student Loan etc

Go here

https://www.ird.govt.nz/cgi-bin/form.cgi?form=incrates

Choose individual person (for most)
The bottom year as above
put in your gross earnings before tax

The end result will show roughly how much you should have been taxed, check this against your tax on the earnings record.

If its within a few dollars its not worth worrying about, a few hundred or more and its worthwhile.

Hope this helps some of you

neither. the PAYE system should be correct, but sometimes it can be off. and sometime u can end up owing money if ur on the wrong tax code

Re: TAX Refund..

I owe them.

This thread is pretty timely considering they have just put another $0.02/L "ACC Levy" on petrol, at a time when everyone is really feeling the high petrol prices. Thanks Helen, that pretty much sums up the last 9 years...

I used to think that too...

BUT its not always right.. I do all the payroll at my work and out of 21 staff 17 were owed money in refunds and they ALL have the correct tax codes even me.

Thing is when you get holiday pay or sick leave it can change the tax amount to incorrect. Always pays to check. Just note as well if you ask the IRD and they say you owe them money you HAVE to pay... if you do it online you can see 1st and then if you have money to pay you dont have too haha

Is it still possible to check if they owe you any money for previous years(before last year) as well?

Yep change the year tax code in the link I posted originally and then use your earning summary from that year..

Pretty sure you can claim the last 4 years of refunds

Re: TAX Refund..

Yeh its random I got a summary of IRD owings too.
It used to be you had to request one, now do they randomly send them out?

Yeh only way you will be owed is if payrol has stuffed it up, like holiday pay being over taxed.
Or you earn under $9880 and can claim a rebate (i.e over 20weeks earning).
Or you only worked part of the year etc etc

there is many little ways that you maybe owed. It's quite hard to stuff it up and OWE IRD money tho.

Most I have ever got is $500 (using under $9880 rebate when i was a student)

Just tried it out, I owe 16 cents for 07
and 2006 i get $161 sweet!

Typical IRD - they hound you if you owe them any money, yet if they owe you, they won't do a thing until you look into it

We automatically send you a personal tax summary (PTS) in July if you received Working for Families Tax Credits, have a student loan and haven't had enough money deducted from your income, used the wrong tax code or used a special tax code.

Re: TAX Refund..

Oh one other thing

Your tax calculations will be wrong if you earnt under $38,000 for that year you are working it out for using the above method.

You need to complete the online personal tax summary calc yourself. That way it will include any rebates.

Doing it the way posted in the first post I get $161
working it out on the IRD website for my 2007 year I get $511
Personal tax summary calculation for xxx is what you need to do
I used the 2007 one because I had not filed for that year
Personal tax summary calculation for 2007 (by tool name)

thats what i used for 2006-2007

Re: TAX Refund..

Would those mall people classify under?

You can claim the following expenses on your PTS:
  • a fee charged by someone for completing your tax return
