what does my stupid pop up mean please ???

I get a message pop up every once in a while saying that my "windows virtual memory" is getting low......yada yada yada.....

What does this mean ?? and how can I fix it ??? and is this to do with why my PC is slow ???

hard drive is full

Hard drive is full:
Open My Computer, right click on Drive C: and select Properties. If
there is less than 200 mb of unused space then the drive is for all
intents and purposes full and you need to remove stuff or get a bigger
drive.

I know alot of computer people that are dodgy.....swap your parts over if they work on your computer etc....

make sure you find out what your motherboard can handle greg.. eg. SATA or IDE etc.. as i dunno how old your pc is..

Before you shell out money on a new HDD... How much free harddrive space do you have? If less than 10% then yes, chances are that is the issue and you need a larger hard-disk, or an additional one. Also consider just getting an external disk if it is mainly media content that is taking up the extra space (like in my case, 15gb applications, 1.1tb media). In that case you will also be able to share it around at LANs more easily (or hide it from the mrs).

Otherwise, right click on my computer > properties > advanced tab > in the performance box click settings > advanced tab > click on the change button under virtual memory > then you have two options:

- select system managed size and then click set

or

- run a static paging file and assign the minimum and maximum values to the same as or about 25% more than the amount of RAM that you have installed.

Then click ok and reset your computer. With the first option of using a system managed paging file allocation, you will not receive any pop-up boxes. The second option will only spawn a pop-up box unless you exceed the set value of the static paging file.

Not necessarily. It means the swap file allocation for virtual memory on the disk is full.

The amount of virtual memory can be increased, but this means you will give away more disk space. Performance may not improve a great deal as having to mechanically access a disk for memory is not as fast as solid state physical memory.

My suggestion, increase virtual memory if possible to get you by just for the while. I haven't done this in ages... what is your operating system?

Is there some new programs you are running which require more memory? The long term fix is to get more physical memory if this is feasible.

running XP.....yea I have alot of programmes I guess, but I cant bring myself to uninstall them as I need them.....I just went through a week or so back and cleaned up a whoole heap.....I guess the five days of music is playing a part in it.

I'm running on just about 200mb of C: drive space at the moment. When I set up my hard drive partitions 3 years ago I underestimated the amount I needed for the windows drive and only allocated 5 gigs to it. I haven't been bothered reformatting since but computer still works fine.

5 days of music is only hmm, about 8-10gb? That shouldn't be an issue.

Also spend an hour cleaning your pc up a bit.
Remove anything from the startup menu you don't use on a daily basis... e.g. your antivirus should be the only thing there really. Cause it'll be loading useless programs into RAM and using it all up. Virtual memory is really just an extension of RAM.
Then run a registry cleaning program, suchas Regclean, to get rid of all the programs in the registry which you've installed (cause they still remain).
The registry also has a "hidden" startup list of programs, cull this as well.

A good old scandisk and defrag makes a difference too.

i just got a new hard drive for my laptop - 250gb for $130 delivered. Only had a 60gb before and so much better with more space. Damn service pack 1 for vista was like 17gb lol
