I've never seen China come to the aid of any small helpless nations when they are in trouble - I'd go as far as saying good on the world for ignoring them.

Now that's not forget which country told lies to the WHO about the bird flu virus and the number of people affected locally which almost nearly caused a world wide spread pandemic.

As already pointed out, China can more than look after their own.

If you want to bring politics into it then perhaps you should ask the leaders of China why they are REFUSING foreign aid workers into its own Country - the only one they've let in so far is Japan, I know of at least 5 other countries with doctors and aid workers looking at getting into the epicentre and have all been refused.

Last thing China needs is more money - what good will it do other than line the pockets of local leaders and corrupt politicians?

Don't get me wrong .. I do feel for those that died in the earthquake - however fingers should be pointed why soo many schools and state housing fell into rubbles when very little damage was done to government buildings. I believe quite a few developers will be facing the firing squad if they haven't already left the country.

President CHEN didn't do good enough so like back in 2000 people decide to elect the opposing party. I still remember when president Chen was elected lots of people say Taiwan will be independent and War was coming. I didn't see that happen tho.

Read up on his history man. It's not about being afraid of him and he's not going to sell out to China with any immediacy. This whole topic deserves its own thread however (I'll let Eric start it haha .. can't be bothered myself).

Well, Ma isn't even Taiwanese, he cant even speak Taiwanese properly, hell he was the ex-English translator for our last great Cheung Kai chek's son!
He considers himself Chinese(born in hk not even tw!), hell for many years he has been pushing to unite with china (1992 bs consensus), which when it happens we will be Chinese too, no longer will we have the freedom to be the identity we were for the last 58 years(goodbye Taiwan identity!).
Hell instead of pushing Taiwan into the international market (and become a country) and become part of WHO he will stop that and only deal our trades through China.
Very soon my friend on that day, you won't get jack shit of a freedom of choice if you decide you wanted to choose on who should run a country (goodbye democracy!) because my man you will be living in a new communist island! woohoo! excited yet?

You need to get your facts right .... those are OFFERS of help - you have to wonder why with soo many OFFERS China is still refusing all those aid workers from entering. I am not talking about journalists ect - I am talking about properly equiped teams of doctors and rescuers that have volunteered to help.

But no ... if you've been following the event and following what the political leaders of China have been saying you'll realise they have only been asking for "DONATIONS" from around the world and world leaders in Asia - heck they even fucken published a list of those that have donated and those that are "about to donate" (get it these are those that have not donated so basically they are saying to them, time to donate).

I feel for those poor people in China ... but I definitely have no respect for those in power. If it takes an event like this to topple those that are corrupt, then those that have died in this disaster have not died for nothing.

I think in both Myanmar and China it is a case of dense overpopulation combined with a relatively relatively low socioeconomic quality of life.

I have to agree that China is lacking in nothing when it comes to dealing with this situation. They have no end of money, they have no end of manpower.
I do speculate on a couple of things.
Firstly: do they want to save as much money as they can, and sit back quite happily while everyone else pays for the rescue effort? I wouldn't put it past them.
Secondly: for decades they've taken a very strict, even barbaric view towards population control. It seems that a situation where many thousands of people die may not necessarily be such a catastrophe in the eyes of the powers that be. In this case, the main concern would be that valuable, educated and skilled personnel may be killed.

China does have vast and populous regions of poverty, but these industrial and commercial cities are not part of that.

I would give my resources to Burma, given that they don't have any. It's a real pity that so little is getting through. You have to be very careful distributing aid.

I can remember back in the days of the NATO airstrikes in Kosovo, back in '99. Someone organised a monstrous relief fund, which raised $1.5b US. They gave this to the local government to find relief aid. Big mistake - between senior government levels and the street, all of the money just evaporated. Nothing was spent on aid- it was all embezzled.
