Golf experts chime in

I know theres some golf experts on these forums... Rustynuts, EVLTEK, etc?...

I've been playing very casually for a couple of years. All this time i've been using this set of Slazenger B52 clubs which I swear is from the 50's or something. Got given to me a while ago from a mate who's 80 year old grandad owned. All the woods are actually wood and the rubber grips don't really grip which affects my game lol

Im needing a set of better clubs but my budget is around $300-$400ish. My dillema is whether to get a new set of those budget brand golf sets you get from trademe or the likes of The Golf Warehouse or to get a second hand set of a decent brand.

If I get a new budget brand set what is a good brand to get?

If I go for a second hand set what brands and models should I look out for that fit my budget?

To get a gauge of my skill level i shoot 40ish around the Firmount 9 Hole in Botany but the holes are quite short I think they average about 130ish metres.

ops:

Cheers

I'd go for the 2nd hand (in good cond) set, you might be able to try a round or two before buying them too?

I've got some 2nd hand Callaway (sp) clubs from my uncle, barely used by him - cost me $300 inc bag which was pretty sweet - you'd deffinatly notice the difference over some lower ended brands IMO

Go for the second hand set of decent clubs. There are some good ones going on trademe from time to time.

I've always used Callaway's and they rock, helps to have the connections though as the new clubs are pretty pricey. Even the earlier sets of irons (X14/X16's) are very good value for money. As for trying before you buy, maybe a golf store might let you do that but they probably won't be the cheapest option.

Other than Callaway's, try Titleist's or Taylor Made's. I've hit a few different clubs and those are the brands I'd recommend.

I love golf. I'm playing tomorrow morning too, in saying that I should go to bed

I play callaway x18, i love mine, good for 72 and lower

Go on trade me and pick up a steele shafted set. Something like a Taylormade OS, OS2 would be perfect but hard to find in the right price range.

Cobra is good for being forgiving

Or this set of x-12, old school goodness

i would really recommend piecing a set together bit by bit.

300-400 should be enough to get you a decent set of quality irons.

Mizuno
Nike
Taylormade etc

Make sure you get the S300 Gold Shafts.

The putter you have will be fine for now unless bent - just play with those irons - a good player could score in the 80's with irons no prob.....

Then perhaps get a 3 or 5 wood or perhaps 3 or 2 hybrid....Srixion ones are great.....

And so on

just make sure if you only buy a few clubs at a time, they are of a common set, so you can find more of them again later.

I play a complete iron game, and can outdrive most wood players with my #2

Come on Adam you should know better!!

tianporn- you need to go get fitted for clubs if you want to get into golf regularly, and it comes down to swing speed to what shaft type you need.

If your a average player like Adam you would go for oversized irons too

i play with all titleist gear, have tryed most top branded gear and thats what i'd say is the best. if you could get a second hand set of them you'd be heading down the right track

my 2 cents

 Best advice.
Go with the "best" set of irons (3-PW/SW) you can afford and then piece together a set from there. After that a good driver and a 3 or 5 wood and then maybe a putter if you feel you need an upgrade. I like the Odyssey ones, my #5 "White Hot" does me well after years of struggling with my putting.

Get out there and try some is the best start.

Callaway X12's for $300
Suit the lower handicap, but good price, and you wouldn't need to change as you got better. Shafts could be a bit firm though
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Golf...-147035396.htm

Taylormade LT2 $300
Good all round club, doesn't say which flex shaft though
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Golf...-147821110.htm

Cleveland TA2 $200
Again suit the slightly better player

Buy some decent irons with most of your money, then get a driver which is less than a couple years old
460cc
9.5 degrees or more
Regular or stiff shaft (you want as soft as you can get away with)
And don't piss around with the adjustable weights, it's pretty much a gimmick
Good driver for less than $400
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Golf...-146866427.htm
Another excellent driver for less than $300
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Golf...-147046615.htm

Trademe kills retailers for secondhand prices, you can get new drivers for just over wholesale.

Thing is, once you buy irons, they don't really date at all. I've been using the same Titleist irons for 10 years despite my brother (who is professional) trying to get me to change. But it's important to have a modern driver as they have advanced a lot in the last 5 years.
Three wood, not so important, just one that you like and hit well.
Wedges, worry about that when you get serious.
Putter, whatever you want.

And once you get into it, custom stuff!!

Taking two weeks off till they recover, then might use the new putter...

Couldn't agree more man! Irons don't date too much, I've just found the newer ones are alot more forgiving if you don't hit them flush in the middle. That being said I've found a few store here selling the Callaway FT-3's for $399 brand new. Not too much difference between them and the FT-5's, have hit the FT-i a few times too but I was too interested with how far the ball went.

Dad's got a 4 months old set of custom set of Forged Callaway X's. Beautiful clubs to hit, just wish he'd lend them to me more often
