Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

This is why you shouldnt try and drive your logging truck like a racing car. Driver sustained only a torn calf muscle. Wasn't wearing a seatbelt and drove straight off the end of a corner after missing a gearchange. Truck was empty at the time hence the trailer being in such good condition as it flew off the back of the truck.

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

Damn that guy is lucky to be alive.

I did my big linehaul trip last week from AKL to WLG, WLG to CHC, and CHC to DUD. Was absolutely buggered by the time I got home as I didn't sleep on any of the rides and then worked the following day in each depot I visited.
I have to say the best run was the day drive from Picton to CHC. What a fantastic road down the coast to Kaikoura, although some VERY tight tunnels.

One question I had for our drivers was that we're currently running Scanias, 1x R500 and 6x R470 - all with opticruise. Most of the drivers enjoy driving the new opticruise as they're just so smooth etc.
We've got a couple of our older Scania 124's coming to the end of their lifecycles and we're currently evaluating DAF, Iveco, Volvo and Scania. As it stands it looks like we're going to stick with the Scanias as we've been dealing with them for years. Any of you guys have a different opinion?

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

if you already have a working relationship with scania and have good service and the trucks have been good, i dont see any real reason to change. most of the new euro trucks are a much-of-the-sameness, all well appointed, all good engine options, all value for money etc. id love the opportunity to drive one in the future, any of em.
ive always been a fan of the bigger scania's tho, driven a big daf unit, a volvo and a scania around the block by my old work (minus trailers) and they were all sexy little numbers.
scania gets my vote

I'v worked on trucks with scania engines for about 4 years, and the new series engine has been in the trucks sold here for 2 years before that. Theres probebly about 100 of them all up. I havn't seen any of the engines die of natural causes. I'v seen a drowned one, a burnt one, an over revved one, and thats about it. I think the reliability is acheived through the centrifugal oil filter, those things work awsome. We've just switched to the 5 cylinder engines last year, do the road trucks come out with 5 cylinders now too?

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

RJ: Stick with the Scanias. From what I can tell you guys are runnning out of cubic capacity before running out of weight. The Scanias are chubby in the weight department but this will of course be irrelevant. Also check to see if they will be on Scanplan, if so they will gain a higher resale value and be gauranteed servicing from Cable Price.

Bump: I'm not the right person to ask about this as I'm going to immediately say Mercedes Benz Actros! But seriously the Americans seem to have proved themselves here on the east coast due to their toughness. I'm a big fan of the new 8x4 Western Star (same as the one I posted above) as they are comparatively cheap ($273k cab and chassis) and have common componentry such as Cummins, Eaton and Meritor.

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

Hmm I've been there before

Sorry for the piss poor pics but I forgot my data cable and the laptops Bluetooth module just dropped its guts.

Had a quick play on this on Sunday:

Tinkered with this aswell before hooking up to its trailer and sending the old man on his way down to Gisborne for 3 days.

Chipliner driver was busy yesterday so did a 6 pack of shook to the sawmill. Old girl has done 622km and looks a bit rough but still has all 220 ponies under there somewhere:

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

One thing that has got my puzzled is, how do they know which container and which? i work next to the train yard in hamilton and they proberly have over 500 containers just in the small area, how do they know which is which?

A lot of my dads trucks at his work that are 2004 model have all done over 600000km, the biggest breakages is the turbos on the cat motors.

every container has a number on it consisting of 4 letters and 7 numbers, basicly a rego for that container, you can see it written in white on the container behind the cab of my truck,

Sure is Jeremy. She's an ex welly Metro unit which we picked up with the business in 2000. Doesnt get a lot of use now as we have the bigger Isuzu which replaces it.

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

How about this RUC bullshit! Funny how the government does it the day they announce they've bought the railways back and they did it on a day when we couldn't buy more, we were forced to buy at the new rate.

Call it a conspiracy theory but it's clear to me that they've done it to make rail more appealing...

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

thats the whole reason they have bought the rail network (and painted it in Labours colours ) to undercut the road transport area with cheaper rail rates and raised RUC.
all the government care about is screwing the little people and alot of operators will go bust if more people use rail

Re: Truckers Corner V2.0

I love trucks aye, I load the things all day but have never got to drive them. We have a UD Nissan Body truck at work that can carry about 6tonne of steel, We also have A SCANIA Prime mover with a 13.5-18m Extendable semi-trailer. It still goes good with a full load of 21tonnes on it. I'll get some pics up

And if anyone can tell me what is that licence process like in nz? And hwo does it work? I am moving back soon but can't remember how you get your heavy rigid licence?

While I think its great they're trying to reduce the traffic on out already-overcrowded road by using rail to transport freight [yeah I know thats probably not a smart thing to say in a thread for truck drivers, but you can't argue that reducing the number of trucks on the road would be a bad thing], I think its absolute bullshit that at a time when people are struggling with fuel prices [and the cost of living in general] they put the RUC up by 7-10% and add a 2c/L ACC levy to petrol. There's no way the trucking companies can/will absorb that sort of increase so it will be passed on to the consumer. Higher food prices, more poverty, thanks a fucking lot Helen. I just hope National has the balls to stand up and say that its unacceptable and they'll cut it as soon as they're elected. Somehow I don't see it happening though....

Was talking to dad about this earlier, people seem to forget they put it up 11% last year and are still going to be hiking it.
