When getting an item sent over usually anything over 500 dollars and there is a custom fee. If it has GIFT or a receipt saying it is below, most of the time a package is waived.

Size, weight and company that ships also have varying costs and services for the customer

I've found thus far that anything over a grand may attract customs, if under they usually don't bother. My dad used to work for a brokerage and said customs doesn't care about things under a grand.

anything that will occur more than $50 worth of customs fees will get picked up, car parts are taxed at 10% so anthing over $500 should occur a fee

u can put gift on it and it may get through with out any fees on it but doesnt always happen

other fees, shouldnt be shipping will be costly, and depends on how u pay for it, pay pal takes a cut off the exchange rate

Just make sure you purchase from a reputable trader, i tend not to touch anyone with less than 500 feed back.
For smaller items ebay is fantastic esp with things like console accesories, sunglasses etc.
Plus paypal is ni-on full proof

From my understanding of the Customs info any incoming goods get charged GST at 12.5% That means you have up to $400 value before you get charged tax. Though it seems some people manage to get packages through without getting charged.

Hmm... somehow Japan EMS seems to slip past customs... i've brought in tens of thousands of dollars worth of parts without being taxed/charged

Not even on larger value items...
Cusco Clutch - $2000
Cusco LSD - $1500
Re-Amemiya Bonnet - $3000
Knightsport Bonnet - $2500
Re-Amemiya sleek lights $1500

No revenue collection will be made if the total amount owing on the goods imported is less than $50. The revenue waiver does not apply to tobacco products. From 01 September 2007 the revenue waiver will also not apply to alcoholic beverages.
just be wairy of the below law

Quote:
Gifts sent from persons abroad to persons resident in New Zealand are not automatically free of Customs duties, but may be granted a full or part concession, depending on the value of the item:
gifts with a value of $NZ110 or less are allowed free entry
gifts with a value that is higher than NZ$110 attract Customs charges on the value in excess of NZ$110.
