A TEENAGER stabbed to death his 81-year-old grandmother after she refused to cook him lunch, a Queensland court was told yesterday.

The Ipswich Magistrate's Court was told Brett Adam Crowley, now 19, confessed to killing Violet Crowley at her Raceview apartment in June during emotional conversations with his sister.

Kim Keleher said her brother told her he "accidentally killed" his grandmother after fighting over a number of issues including her failure to prepare his meal and refusal to lend him her car.

Mrs Crowley's blood-soaked body was found in the bedroom of her Kingston Way unit, which she shared with her grandson, by two granddaughters about 11.30am on Friday, June 30, last year after she failed to attend a medical appointment.

At the time, a neighbour said she heard "screaming and yelling" when she had walked past the unit on the Wednesday morning.

Crowley has yet to enter a plea to one count each of murder and stealing cash.

During the first day of a committal hearing, acting magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist was told Crowley admitted slaying his grandmother during interviews with police after his mother secured his peaceful surrender.

Ipswich Criminal Investigation Branch detectives Sergeant Gary Dixon and Senior Constable Darren Prickett testified Crowley had asked for a solicitor then changed his mind and said he "just wanted to get it off his chest".

However, Keleher said her brother confessed what he had done after she had convinced him to come to her home not long after the discovery of her grandmother's body.

Under cross-examination by barrister David Shepherd, for her brother, Keleher said Crowley was inconsolable and sobbed when he revealed what he had allegedly done.

"He just said it was an accident," his sister said.

"He said they had an argument. He said: 'I stabbed her.'

"He said he wanted her car for something '. . . (and) we were arguing over money and she wouldn't make me lunch'."

The court also heard testimony from one of Brett Crowley's friends who said he turned up at her home covered in blood and numerous small cuts on the day his grandmother was found dead.

Angie Turner, 25, said Crowley was agitated, pale and his hands were shaking when he admitted he killed his grandmother.

"He broke down and said he accidentally killed his grandma," she said.

"He was crying. He was just bawling his eyes out."

The hearing continues tomorrow.
