iPhone

Well it is official, the iPhone was officially released by Jobs at the annual Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Jobs described it as the "magical device" that would "revolutionise the industry"!

Apple iPhone website

Overview
iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone.

Technical Specifications
Screen size: 3.5 inches
Screen resolution: 320 by 480 at 160 ppi
Input method: Multi-touch
Operating system: OS X
Storage: 4GB or 8GB
GSM Quad-band: (MHz: 850, 900, 1800, 1900)
Wireless data: Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + EDGE + Bluetooth 2.0
Camera: 2.0 megapixels
Battery: Up to 5 hours Talk / Video / Browsing, up to 16 hours Audio playback

Dimensions:115 x 61 x 11.6mm
Weight: 135 grams

...So who's going to be getting one when the (eventually) hit NZ?

Na cool is out, I think?

Well I might consider one at the end of the year. I currently have a Treo 650 but no iPod/portable music/video player so I may look at ditiching the Treo and going with the Apple. Only advantage of the Treo is that it is MS Office compatible which is VERY useful for work...

Whats wrong with the nanos? Wouldn't most people class them as the most reliable of ipods?

I wouldn't look at getting one... especially with the no doubt huge price tag it'll get?

What's up with that? Surely Apple must be thinking global domination iPod style with it.

I'll be sticking with Microsoft Smartphone based devices for now though. Integration with work email is still the key feature I need.

$US599 for the 8GB model, which is $NZ878. I'd say it'd go for $899-999 to start with.

Btw, try as I might I haven't killed my Nano yet. I have no idea what's on the screen after standing on it, but I haven't killed it...

Start at US$499 (NZ$720) and will probably be available in the UK slightly later for about £335 (NZ$940). So going on previous trends it will probably start off here at about $1050. I don't consider that too be too bad a price considering what the (cellulalar) competition are offering...

For comparison: (NZ$)
Treo 750 - 1300
Blackberry 8707 - 1200
Sony Ericson P990 - 1300
Sony Ericson W850 - 950
Nokia N93 - 1600
I-Mate JasJar - 2000

Looks a bit flimsy to me.. I drop my phones on a regular basis plus I don't like Apple products simply due to the fact that majority use microsoft even though Apples are superior in many ways.

Yea it currently only support the 2.25/2.5 standard EDGE but I'm sure they will release a version that supports 3G or UMTS. UMTS is really becoming the worldwide standard for the next genearation of cellphones so I don't see how Apple can ignore that.

I would defiantely buy one of these. I always have my ipod and cellphone with me so if I can combine them together then that is even better, cut down on the shit I have to carry. And if its 900 - its expensive but it is an ipod (500ish) and a phone so I guess it aint too bad. It does help that I have a work sim card and dont pay for any calls/txts I make.

3G is a scam.. I turn off the 3g in my phone as video calling is a bit of a gimmick, and I don't use it for much data

Has anyone actually taken a look at the demos on the apple website, this thing is gonna change the whole market, I think that it is brilliant. Remember this is the first version, wait for the smaller and higher capacity for more music. This shits on my brand new 3G nokia, and I love Nokias

I have, and I think it rocks Kinda gutted it doesn't have a bigger MP camera on it, but if it's high enough quality, I'll get over it.

There is debate about EDGE being 3G or not. It can provide 3G speeds, but it's not true 3G.

Personally I think the actual phone rocks. Sure it lacks a little in the features department (2MP camera) and it will be expensive, but it's Apple, and nobody does shit as cool as Apple.

Well yeah, if the materials used to make it are anything like the Nano then the fancy touch screen will be a fancy opaque mess of scratches in about a week

If the battery is anything like as shite as my 5g ipod then no way.

While your music player running out of battery can be annoying, having a cellphone run out is far, far worse.
