computer/modem question

Just a question for all you IT gurus. If you're in a house and you want to run more than one computer and have access to the net, I'm aware that you can use a router (wireless or otherwise) but could you also simply use another modem if you have one lying around? So essentially you'd have one computer plugged into an adsl modem and in another room you have another modem plugged into another adsl modem, or would you have to pay for an additional modem hook up or something? thanks guys.

Re: computer/modem question

No, you can't plug one modem into another.

Easiest way is to buy a router with an inbuilt modem.

Or buy an ethernet router for your current router, they are cheap as chips i.e. $120 for a netgear ethernet router/firewall/wireless access point.

But no, you'd need a second phone line AND need adsl installed on that as well. Totally not worth it.

Internet connection sharing is another option. I can't seem to remember how it works though. www.google.com should be able to shed some light.

I would avoid internet connection sharing unless you have your computer on 24/7. Ethernet routers can be picked up on trademe for about $30

Not unless the points have the same phone number I believe. But even then, you may not be able to.

I can't see a problem if your using two jackpoints, just check with xtra that they allow two logons going at the same time, if they say yes than go for it

That will not work. Check my reply to your post in the other broadband thread.

1 ADSL 'modem' per phone line. Not jack point. Router is your best bet, cheaper and will allow you to share files between the two computers as well.

OK so that makes it a router with added USB... Was never sure if you could actually use both as i always go right for larger scale gear mainly running layer 2 or 3.

yeah don't think usb and ethernet will both work at same time, a modem should only be able to assign one ip address

Sorry guys, allow me to clarify. Right now, I have a computer in my room with a phone jack point and that's where I'm using my one adsl modem and laptop. In the other room, my roommate wants internet on her laptop too. I'm looking at a cheap solution to get the net on her laptop. she has a phone jack point as well so I was either thinking:
A. Get a router and just run a line to her laptop.
B. See if I can find a cheap modem and just plug it into her phone jack exactly as my setup is.

I considered going wireless, but too much for my liking and I don't really want a long blue cord running along the side of the floorboard so that's why I was enquiring about the phonejack point and modem in her room as well.

^^^cheapest way is to get a long usb cable(or ethernet) and plug one side into the modem and the other side into her laptop. i did that with my flatmate and it worked fine. (ignore all the hardout computer jargon above)

But at the moment, I'm using the modem in my room and the Ethernet cable port is running a cable that is plugged into my laptop. The only other available slot is the USB one on the back of my modem and I just tried to plug that into her laptop while mine is using the ethernet and nothing is happening to her computer.

It can't direct traffic to two computers at once, thats why the router was designed

That's what I was thinking. In any case, so how bout my second option of getting another modem and then just plugging it into the phone jack in her room and then using the ethernet cable into the laptop?

You can't have multiple ADSL modems connected to a phone line at once.

Think of it as a really high frequency version of a normal telephone call. When one person is on the phone, you can't make a second call.

She could use a dialup modem to connect to the internet while you were using an ADSL connection, but that's not a very good solution

Personally I'd sort her out with a wireless PCMIA card, and get a wireless router to put in your room over which you can share your ADSL connection

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I'll be doing the router. I just thought about the modem cuz I saw a few really cheap ones, cheaper than some routers! haha, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks guys!

The cheapest and simplest solution is to buy a $25 hub and do what you don't want to do... run a cable to them.

Connect the hub/switch to your current router via a cross-over ethernet cable, your flatties computer to the switch/hub with a straight through ethernet cable and the same with you then away you go, provided your router is also acting as a DHCP server you should be fine.
