My dear, aRJay - Till is a word

In the 18th century the spelling 'till became fashionable, as if till were a shortened form of until. Although 'till is now nonstandard, 'til is sometimes used in this way and is considered acceptable, though it is etymologically incorrect.

As someone who works in a school I have a mixed bag about his idea.

I have a hard time reading it and it would certainly make marking exams harder, but as long as you can demonstrate an understanding of the question i don't see to much of a problem with it.

In saying that, alot of people thought the way Shakespear wrote was horrid, and yet this way of writting and spelling is still taught in schools.

Text spelling i think is just another progression in the english language the same way the some of the words we used when we were younger are now common place today and in fact are allowed to be used in exams.

So is the point of the exam understanding the question or the answer you give?

Sure there is natural progression in language (quick eg: shakespares betwix to the modern between) but IMO acronyms and such truncated abbreviations shouldnt be advocated.

Thats just stupid. I feel weird writing txt phrases such as lol or omg. To me it will always only feel ok typing it. Not to mention who in the right mind would even think of accepting it. My dad has never sent a single text in his life, and he actually received a certificate of thanks from some society dedicated to the protection of the english language lol.

NCEA may accept it, but I am damn sure that most trade/uni exams will never accept it.

^^ Agreed. When I actually see someone write "lol" or "omg" or shortened/phonetical language, I just point and laugh at their inferior intelligence. Honestly, what use is it? Apart from confusing people and saving maybe half a second of writing. Pfft...

Exactly. If I was still doing NCEA i'd write overly formally just to prove a point

tkz me mre tym tryn 2 thnk bowt hw mny vwlz im gna drp. it wnt save 1 2nd n an exam.

Plus, things could be thrown out of context. E.g. "wnt save 1 2nd". When it should be "Won't save one second"

Anyone feel me??

I actually can't read that at all

Does anyone here use predictive texting, I find it heaps faster and it all makes sense.

ie to say "ate" you press 3 keys.

or in txt spk : "8" you press the 8 key 4 times = slower.

Has anyone seen the e-mail floating around explaining that you only have to get the first and last letter of any given word right with approximatly the same number of letters and you can still read it???

But in schools?! Next they will have to put together a txt english class.
