Against it for the parking reasons as well as they've already started to upgrade Eden Park so whats the point in spending that money if they aren't even going to use it. In the long run it might be a good idea if they don't have a timeframe and can plan it a bit better.

Im all for it, as lonf as traffic issues and effects are thought through correctly, but knowing Auckland they will just whack it up and then you'll all be fucked for ten years while they build a new motorway!

Looks like they prefer Captain Cook Wharf now (Looking towards Devonport, it's to the right of Queens Wharf)

A retro-fit of Eden Park would be ideal - but that also involves a crap load more cash being thrown into Public Transport - traffic around there is incredibly bad when there is even a hint of a game happening. You can write off getting anywhere in a hurry, if at all, if you live in it's near vacinity. Yes, I know how much of a pain in the ass the city traffic can be, but it also offers far far more parks, a central public transport system that supports more of Auckland than Sandringham / Mt Eden. Closing streets around the city on a Weekend day would not interfere with as many local residents as does Eden Park and Ericsson Stadium (though Ericsson at least has the luxury of an Industrial zone as well).

I'm Fencing it - sitting that is

Regardless of what we think of the 700mil suggested in it's construction, we ultimately have no say. I don't see a referrendum in the works about it (unless I missed it..), and whose to say the chunk of change left on an Eden Park upgrade will go anywhere productive either.

eden park is an awful stadium, as long as they make it a decent cricket ground then it would be all good.

I think it is less of an eyesore than thousands of shipping containers stacked on top of each other

I am not much of a rugby person either and personally think we have enough stadiums, but i think the idea of building another stadium on the wharfs of all places is just plain stupid. A wharf believe it or not is near the water to allow boats to unload containers, why the hell build a stadium there?! If they really want to build it near the water wouldn't it make more sence to do it the other side of the america's cup village where the tanks are they will apparently be moving soon, its not a good area for big boats anyway and needs a good tarting up.

Can someone explain to me what that other monstosity they have just finished building along Quay st where the oriental markets used to be is for? I thought the whole point in building that was it was a rugby stadium?

What I don't understand; the principal use of the stadium will be what: RUGBY

Is rugby, especially on the level of the games that will be played in the stadium, commercially viable? HELL YES!

So why should the taxpayer pay for it? I DON"T KNOW!

Surely the stadium should be funded by the sponsors behind Rugby- Adidas, Steinlager, etc... not convinced that the government should pledge a single dollar towards it!

I don't care if it's not called Aotearoa Te Tiriti o Waitangi Tane Mahuta Tame Iti Stadium- call it AdidasSteinlagerTelecomFordTerritory stadium- those guys are companies who are allowed to ruthlessy spend the profits they make off us without public consultation- unlike the government (though they seem to think they can!)

Simply said... the waterfront is supposed to be a calm site to the eye, putting a big fuckoff stadium there just ruins it. What an eyesore.

Yeah it is. Look at the size of that, then imagine a stadium five times bigger on the waterfront. What an eyesore

Roofs are gawd-dammed 'spensive these days, huh.

Anyhoo, I heard a mention of Hotel Bed Tax etc as a means to help pay for it.
Not only will we see rates rise, it sounds like it's another excuse for surcharges.

In saying that, no matter which way they decide - new Stadium, or flash up an older one - it's still going to cost a bundle, and we'll still ultimately be paying for it in the end. End user status sucks, huh

i think the theory behind it is that it will bring revenue into auckand city if the stadium is bang smack at the base of it.........but duh town will still go off regardless.....knock down eden park.......fuck the water front......build it somewhere that actually has some spare land.....ftw

This whole thing has been very poorly handled right from the start, and has left a bad taste in many voters mouths.

It's pretty arrogant of the government to decide that they want the stadium built on the waterfront, without a thought to the impact of New Zealand's largest container point.

Then they decide that tourists and users of Auckland Airport (read monopoly) will be taxed to help fund it, in addition to the $700m being donated by central Government that should in reality, be spent on more important things like boosting funding to the nation’s under-funded health-care system. BTW: I thought Cullen said we didn't have enough money for tax cuts? Didn't he also state that massive capital injections into the economy would cause a inflation to rise? And wasn't he worried about the effect of NZ's obsession with property as a vehicle for investment? Hmmm....

Then when a stink is kicked up, they threaten to take the world cup to CHCH, who have never even been approached about it, and who don't want the financial burden.

And finally Eden park is bagged because Cullen doesn't think it's an appropriate venue.

Neither are appropriate venues. Parking around eden park is shit and dont try and tell me that 60,000 parking on the streets and walking to the venue will work because it won't.

The new stadium would be right next to britomart for tains and busses, which despite what people think, aren't all that bad.

Either way, the expenditure is required - eden park is a shithole and has traffic/parking issues and doesn't have the capacity required for the cup.

I'm not in support for either unless they tear down all of the existing eden park facilities and start from scratch, along with adequate parking and roading modifications.

i've got to say that i TOTALLY OPPOSE the idea. that's the dumbest idea ever popped out by the officials..... wondering what level of education they have.

i mean.... 1st, its above the water and reclaimed land, makes it not suitable for construction that size. even if they managed to build it, the cost will be higher than standard 'on-ground' construction. you have to construct some strengthening braces under the pier to support the building in full capacity.

2ndly, who's gonna pay?? they already know that the council dont have much money in it. i gotta say, there will be another increase in rates and blah blah blah.... u should know the rule by now. they come up with this 'bed-levy' for travellers or tourists that come to auckland. even that wont cover most of the cost. there will be US, the auckland RESIDENTS that will PAY for the building.

3rdly, why would they bother to build another stadium???? who's gonna use it??? i hardly see any big-scale use of north harbour stadium, or another stadium on other suburbs. yes, eden park is the most lavish stadium we have. but i believe, if the government can turn their greedy eyes to some other efficient yet economical options, there are plenty out here in auckland. sometimes i wonders, why dont they held the worldcup in wellington, the capital??

4th, its a biassed point of view. im not a rugby fans.... therefore, i have all my right to oppose the idea. i dont wanna pay any more levy, or tax, (or whatever they wanna call them) that i dont see any use for me. i dont mind paying the petrol tax, tho. dont think that im just a greedy person or what. but i believe, in these days, where everything are just sooo expensive, cost of living, transportation, entertainment..... etc etc.... its just buckle ur hands together on ur back. life will be easier without these kind of trouble.

end rant

Stadium decision - over to you now

Stadium decision - over to you now
By Bernard Orsman
Auckland has two weeks to choose between a stadium on the Auckland waterfront and upgrading Eden Park.
If the city can't make up its mind, Christchurch's Jade Stadium will become the main venue for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
What do you want?
Over the next fortnight the Herald will publish a running tally of Aucklanders who declare themselves for or against the stadium.
Just write "yes" or "no" to the stadium in an email and send it to the Herald newsdesk: newsdesk@nzherald.co.nz
Include your name and the suburb you live in.
We'll publish the names daily.

I think a lot of people made up their mind after seeing the crappy photoshop pics of the European stadium plonked on the waterfront 5x bigger than it would actually be... "Oh my God it's hideous! It dwarfs the Sky Tower!!1!!". I admit I voted no to it based on those pictures, but I want to change that vote now

After seeing the proper pictures with the stadium in proper scale I think it actually looks pretty sweet. It doesn't look like a bed pan or sea urchin or whatever people thought it would...

  Hurry up and build it!

i agree on having a waterfront stadium,... i think it will be great for the game. eden park is long past its used by date, in saying that however, the new concept they showed on the news this week looks good, pity it wont happen because of the near by residents, which i have to say, why live there if your gunna complain about noise and light!!!?!

however, i dont agree on them using the same design as the germany world cup stadium for it..!!!!

forking out over 500mil surely, they could get some better concepts.
