Your thoughts of the 1UZ

Hey people I have recently found out that I have a fetish for Toyota 1UZ V8s, they have to be one of the sweetest sounding engines on the planet!I was hoping to find out as much as I possible can about them and would love to hear your UNBIASED opinions on them and any experiences you may have had with them in the past.If you could post up what info you know or a link to a site that you think is worth a look please do

http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=2884
and
1UZ Poweded AE86 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t9S7BRtq5s&NR

My mate's father has put 8 of them in various jetboats. Great motors, cheap as chips too. If you can get a newer one out af a Lexus it'll have VVTI aswell.

Awesome motor, neigh indestructible. You're right about the sound to, sounds like sex (Nothing on the redlining RB though  ). If you can get one i say go for it, it will slot straight your mark 2 and it'll be loose as a goose.

 from me

Certainly is, You could still throw a hairdryer or two on the 1UZ. I know of a boosted one that will sit on on 12psi all day everyday.

I just think that the 1JZ or 2JZ conversion would be a little boring and people wouldn't get that 'wow' factor when you open the bonnet.I think the sound and pure drivability of the 1UZ more than makes up for any disadvantage in power it has versus a 1 or 2JZ.Sure it won't be as fast but as a cruzing car I think the 1UZ would be the best option

Now, anyone going to help me put it in...haha.Oh and someone like to donate me an engine, g/box and diff...haha

A gearbox won't be cheap, My mate that puts them in Jetboats may be able to get you one for sub 1 grand, I don't know if your loom will plug straight up. Also you'll need a low ratio hilux diff as most hilux's have 4.something to 1 diffs rather than the 3.something to 1 that you need.

Yeah I know the gearbox won't be cheap,so maybe i'll just keep it with the Auto much cheaper and if its just for cruzing it won't make a lot of difference.

Wrong. Vh41 are newer, better technologically, better aftermarket support and there are clearance issues with vh45 on RHD cars.

Well regarding the 1UZ-FE motors I think they are superb, lately I’ve been think about a 3.0Gt 2jz as a replacement for my Rafaga.. But every time I watch videos and listen to sound files of a Soarer with these v8s I instantly think, wow this V8 is absolutely brilliant, almost nothing that can come close to its reliability and all the rest!

On Friday last week I was going along MT Eden road in stand still traffic, I heard this strange roaring sound and looked out the window and the next thing I know its a 1UZ Soarer with a free flowing exhaust system passing me at least 100km/h! It was absolute magic, to tell you the truth I got dam excited so I turned around and flowed it it was just awesome that sound, I had to hear it again but unfortunately lost it

However in the last week I though hmm… what about the celsiors as a replacement car, I was looking at a 1st Gen model in March however it was a tired example - I was still impressed. Anyway now back to September, I recently though hey what about the 2nd gen 1994+ re-design models! They have newer styling, newer everything! and best of all at the heart of it is that 1uz with a better 194kw/365nm standard. So Im considering one of these as a huge replacement for this Rafaga Im driving currently. I Just like the though of a near silent smooth ride even though they aren’t sports cars plenty of power and comfort - It would be just brilliant, expecially with a Dual free flowing exhaust!

So obviously Im quite fan of these motors!

I know exactly what you mean! This is exactly what Ive been think regarding a 2jz (na) 3.0 soarer compared to the v8 models, they just have much more of a 'wow' factor like you were saying but due to their age Ive gone off the v8 soarers... However lately a 1UZ 2-Gen celsior/LS400 could be on the cards for a replacement at the end of the year or a bit later. Personally I think nothing can beat the 1UZ, sure there are faster turbo cars but thats not the point.

Thats always an option. If you want to go the whole hog and have an aftermarket computer done give me a yell and I'll out you on to my mate the Lexus expert. Hell if you want the whole thing done they would do it for ya. Always up for a challenge and they'll do a new exhaust and all that other Jazz.

I'll throw the guy a text tonight to see if he would be keen. What is your current motor? I'm assuming the 1UZ is a straight bolt up? All I know about them is they go fucking good and handle dirty great big hairdryers.

Well in my opinion this video clip pretty much sums up the whole 1UZ thread perfectly:

http://www.planetsoarer.com/videos/xpipe1.wmv

Click save as!

Thats what you get with a full system, 2.5" headers, x-pipe and dual 2.5" lukeys - At the end of the day that sound is all that matters

I learnt a bit about the 1UZ when my mate put one into his hilux. Try and get the green injector version as they put out the most power. They dont have the crappy 2nd throttle plate for the traction control system and they have nice stainless headers rather than the ugly cast manifold. Fantastic engine. With intake, exhaust and LINK its an easy 350hp and put a heavy (double cab) hilux into the 13s supported with a supra box. Such a good package. He picked up the motor and auto box for $900. Fasted ute Ive been in, goes off the clock in 3rd 8O
