Any Computer Geeks

Hey My Pc decided not to Post,
It will turn on, CDR HDD all boot up (well hear them) but the Monitor wont turn on, If I take the cable out the monitor will say Signal output missing, I know it could be the Vid card, but can I take the card out to see if it would boot up and then log into it via remote DEsktop/?? or does the computer need the vid card to POST???
call me a n00b, but I have no idea

I had a similar problem, I somehow fixed it by vaccumming the inside of the computer (and anywhere round the box etc) and just taking out the vid card and give the connector pins and socket a good clean..... God knows how many years have passed since I last opened it up, it was literially covered in dust balls 8O

hope it solves your problem

Definately check the video card is seated properly - if it's a PCI card you could try moving it to another slot even.

Is it actually trying to load the o/s (ie is there much disk access), or is it just dying before if gets that far?

my suggestion would also be to pop the lid and re-seat the video card. When you remove the card fro mthe slot give the slot a blow out so you don't force any dust into the contact area and reseat the card. If it's PCI try another port if one is spare, if it's AGP you're pretty limited on the spare port front

Try that as it's a free easy solution as a first off.

IF you have a pci video card, you need a new computer.

LOL

Do you see the BIOS load at all or is the screen completely black? I had this problem the other day on a machine I was building and the processor was dead.

seconded .

Have you disturbed the machine recently? I.E moved it.

Do you have on-board graphics? IF so try switching to that. What do you get in safe mode?

Edit: try super VGA mode too.. had a similar thing when someone had put the refresh rate of the monitor above what it could handle so it displayed ning. Pretty sure XP auto corrects this tho

This won't help if there is no video during the post sequence though - that runs entirely indepedently of windows.

Onboard graphics or AGP/PCI video card?

Have you checked connections within your computer case? (Between graphics card and motherboard)

It can be to many things need some more information.

I would not suggest vacuming your computer, it can discharge a lot of static electricity onto the componets.

Just use compressed air next time. Works better too.
