8O that's 1 scary news.... !!!! i just cant imagine how it happen when i read the news off the herald this morning. im very surprised.

i dont think the van driver is at fault. the travel owner said that this guy is the slowest of all their driver, and he rather be late than floor the throttle pedal. but yet, he still lost control cross the median and hitted by the coming truck on the other side. nevertheless, this truck driver is an experienced one, and investigator proved that he brake hard long before the impact. so.... who's at fault???? i think its the road. its too slippery .... !!! is it valid? hahaha

but really, that's one big mistery.

Its been on the news and in the news papers most of the week..

Quote:
lost control due to wet road conditions on highway while turning
Funny how the newspapers get it wrong, he wasnt turning - he was going around a 95kph bend - a very slight bend but they said it was raining, with alot of dew etc which made the road slippery and hence the van skipping to the other side...

Very sad and tragic - when my parents heard it they rung my brother because he takes the same road and about the same time and thought it was him (because they didnt say it was a van with 8 people or so) - but he said that the accident must have happend a short time after because he saw the fire engines etc going past him...

Tragic, tragic indeed - maybe this will make the goverment upgrade our bloody roads!!!...

I heard straight from the truck company as they are based in my home town, that the van driver was driving along, then the van aqua planed as it was goin around the corner and went into the truck.
Shoes how slippery the roads are.

the road is a very dodgey road, but if you pay attention and know what you are doing (which surely the driver was doing) there should be no reason for anything to happen, unless the van got sideways round the corner and he overcorrected and ended up on teh wrong side of the line,

but that is for the police to figure out and we all must feel sorry for the families affected,
did the person that survived the crash and was in hospital survive at all? or are they still in critical condition?

The 18-year-old Indian woman was airlifted to hospital by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance after yesterday's horror smash on SH27 left eight others dead.

She was one of the eight tourists being taken by an Auckland driver in a Mercedes minibus to Rotorua.

The dead included the girl's mother, father and sister, aged 42, 50 and 20.

Today she was unconscious and on life support but was expected to survive.

The other people killed in the country's worst crash since eight people died at Mohaka in 1995 included an American couple aged 57 and 45; a Frenchman, the can driver and a Thai woman, 42, who overseas media named as Naphat Juiyim.

The minibus was one of two from Auckland company Greenworld Tours heading to Rotorua.

Police believe the minibus spun out of control on the slippery road and into the path of a northbound Freight Lines truck. The truck had been carrying sawn timber.

The truck driver was uninjured but suffered major shock in the crash.

Police communications manager Kris McGehan said the driver is being given comprehensive victim support.

It is understood the man's employer, Otorohanga-based Freight Lines Ltd, had also arranged counselling.

In a statement, company director Peter Barker expressed sadness about the crash.

"There is no indication that our driver was at fault but to be involved in such a tragic event is devastating," he said.

Traffic flow on the stretch of road will be down to one lane today as the police serious crash unit investigators try to find out what happened.

Shocked police dealing with the crash are confident they will find out what made the minibus veer across the road.

Senior Sergeant Ross Ardern from Morrinsville police said the driver was known to be fastidious and his employers said he never exceeded 95km/h. At that speed the minibus should have handled the corner very comfortably, said Mr Ardern.

It had been raining and the road was wet.

He said it was too soon to speculate on the cause and could not comment on the suggestion the minibus may have hit a patch of oil.

"There was so much oil on the road from the truck that it would be almost impossible to determine. Certainly other vehicles had gone around that road that morning with no problem."

this happend on the corner of my uncle and dads farm they all went to help, when i got hold off them they where still in shock. ive never had a problem with that bend but in the rain in a van thers a good chance you could come off.
Dad heard the impact about 2 kms away and went to visit my uncle and then saw the scene and went to help the road and and surrounding areas where covered in debries and the truck ended up on the opposite side of the road.
The people got thrown out of the van i heard.

vans are Useless.. .handling wise... i remember driving our van around in slightly wet conditions, no weight in the back and i put my foot slighly on the accelerator (just to see what it would do)... next thing i am doin nothing but wheelspin and major body rock/roll... Moral of the story, you cant go as fast round a corner in a van as you can in a truck or car.... unless the van is lowered....

It's now the 2nd worst road accident in N.Z.s history, the worst being in 1963 when 15 died when a bus went off the road & hit a pole.
