$800 to spend

ok guys here we go i have 800 bucks to spend on my baby teg, its just a nice standard b16a haven't done much just an intake.

What do you guys think would be to get to squeeze as much hp out of my teg with 800??

I was thinking extractors and I'm not sure what else to get

Re: $800 to spend

Might be able to get extractors and an exhaust for $800 if you get them both second hand. But you would probably be better off spending a bit more on one and save up til you can afford another.

Re: $800 to spend

Get Extractors and save for an exhaust. Mild steel exhaust is probably not too expensive from the likes of Pitstop.. wouldn't bother to "chip" the ecu.. get something like vafc if you want to mildly tune it

Re: $800 to spend

Don't bother with chipping your ECU unless theres actually a need for it. Usually that need comes after at the very least intake, headers and exhaust. For you now I guess get a good set of extractors and save up for a 2.25 inch exhaust system.

Re: $800 to spend

not too much off b16 or b18 for that matter. But an improvement. 2.25 from Pitstop incl muffler maybe 500-600

Re: $800 to spend

I would say get a freer flowing muffler then some cams.

Then do some free weight reduction, That will feel like you have more power then anything else u can really do for cheap.

Other wise if you want to add some decent power buy half a turbo setup lol.

Re: $800 to spend

Without extractors and exhaust I don't think cams are gona do jack. More lift and duration won't do shit if it still has to flow through the same restrictive stock exhaust.

Plus you cant add bugger all lift or duration with the stock valvetrain so thats even more money poored into an engine that isn't yet breathing correctly.

I'd take your time and look around for a decent set of aftermarket extractors and exhaust, i'm a fan of off the shelf bolt on exhaust systems just because they've had the R&D and are generally very good fitting with lots of clearance (not saying anyones local bro cant weld up a good system, but i've seen plenty of dodgy stuff out there). If you took your time i'm sure you could find some second hand exhaust and extractors for your budget or a little bit more.

IMHO good quality branded second hand stuff is better then buying cheap no name brand new parts (usually both are of a similar price too).

Depending what generation B16A you have you could also find a H22A throttle body at a pic a part which i think is a 62mm which is 2mm bigger then gen 2 and 3 B16A's or 4mm bigger if its a gen 1.

Then just spend the money on some decent servicable items like engine and gearbox fluid, filters, decent spark plugs, radiator fluid etc.

Alright, try pick up some late model B16A cams like gen 3 or gen 2 in manual which should be bugger or if not free and make sure you're running a manual ECU. Then slap on a H22A throttle body and maybe a Gen 2 B16A intake if you can pick it up cheap enough (i think they're like $18 at pick a part if you can find one) which a hondata/gizzmo intake gasket and do the coolant by pass trick. Leave the Gen 1 injectors there as long as they're in good condition cause they're the business.

Then i'd look at an exhaust system and try and get it with a 2.5 inch flange or get a cat with a 2.5 inch flange (should be able to find a type R for less then $50) and smash out the inside. Then get a 96 spec ITR or CTR 4-2-1 2 piece extractors which you can usually get for $20 or free if you're lucky which wont see a huge increase in power but a small one which should definetly get you started for now.

Then just slowly take it from there

Yeah i'd sell it and get a 3 inch pod setup and then make a custom box to heat shield it. Then get some ducting up from your bumper. Maybe consider a Blox Velocity stack, i've heard great things about them.

I haven't been too impressed with some of the whale penis intakes. Some of the copies can be a bit rough, they're essentially just a short ram intake much like a 3 inch pod setup. Apparently they dont make huge top end power but a bit more torque down low.

Re: $800 to spend

If u do go with extractors you will need to get some with 2 o2 sensors.

My car also use to be auto but I run CTR cams with stock exhaust manifold and pritty much stock exhaust just stripped cat and no muffler. Buddy club stage 2 or blox stage 2 are just a bit bigger then CTR cams.

I dont see a point chaning exhaust manifold or going over 2.25' on a b16a, Pick up harldy any power up top for losing more down low which is where it needs more power.

You might aswell just pick up a whole gen2 intake manifold and throttle boady which will be 60mm instead of 58mm and will save u boaring your one out.

If ur still running auto ecu eather buy a manual one or just chip use with a manual map + add some features.

Re: $800 to spend

what about spark plugs and leads? thay arent that much would go good with me intake setup. extractors and get the cat back removed and re place with a cody (will give a nice ring to it)
what about weight reduction?

Re: $800 to spend

I know you've asked about power ... but, considering the crack down on car noise etc, I'd suggest you do something else totally. What is your suspension like? One of the best $ / fun returns you will get on a front drive car is to get an adjustable rear sway bar.

I had a Corolla (front drive) club car that I put a rear bar onto, and at the track you could drive it anywhere looking out the side windows just with trailing throttle oversteer. It was the most fun ever. I did the same bar on a front drive Starlet, and while it didn't give me mad oversteer like the Corolla, it made the turn in absolutely instant.

Probably $300 worth. Plus, it's totally legal, and won't get you any grief at WoF time, or attract any attention from the law. While intake noise, exhaust noise etc is all going to get you attention you don't want.

The other thing to do, is to get good quality tyres. I don't know what you've got on the car, but I see a lot of nice cars running Nankangs, GT Radials, no-name-dodgy-cheapies, and wonder if people realising just how much bad tyres hurt every aspect of car performance. Again, it is a legal "mod" that doesn't get any of the wrong attention.
