Weird hissing noise coming from amp its self?

I installed an Sony 800watt xplod amplifier, the new style one from REPCO. It worked good for a few weeks in my old car but now I put it into my torneo and it seems a hissing, like real high pitch noise is coming from the amp its self, not the speakers.

I tried different grounding points, also tried un-pluging the sub from the AMP to see if it was making noise through that, nope.

Even tried having JUST the power going to it and shorting the 12volts to the "remote" input to turn it on with just power and ground, still makes the hissing sound.

I would take it back to Repco but I don't have the receipt for it anymore, I have the box and the manual though

Sony? Repco? oh man....

personal opinions aside lol, have you tried earthing the amp directly to the negative on the battery, and isolating it from the chassis? or try disconnecting the RCA's and see if it only makes the noise when its trying to 'work'

How long are the power and earth wires. I had a xplod amplifier and made a bad sound, thought it was going to blow up so I gave it away. mate got it to work perfectly using a capacitor, It ovously didn't like having cables over 1M long.

So try using another car battery and plug it into that with short wires and see if it still does it.

Re: Weird hissing noise coming from amp its self?

Thanks guys,

Yeah tried directly and a different power source. also tried unplugging the rca's and speaker output.

Earth wire is very small, under a meter. Don't see how anything could be wrong with the wiring. I tried another spare amp I had and that works fine so must be something wrong with the sony?

Anyone know if I can get a replacement/refund without receipt and repco?

If you want a refund from repco you will have to find proof of funds transfer (bank statement) and they can re-print a reciept from that. All electrical stuff returned has to be sent to the manufacturer or repair agent before a refund is given to make sure its not an install error (which is unlikely) and when that process is complete (usually 7 working days) you will get a replacement or refund.

Hope that helps

Re: Weird hissing noise coming from amp its self?

My uneducated guess is an internal fault. One of my amps did that and it got fixed at Max Electronics in Auckland.

Sony..fault...hmmmmm??? Take it back to Repco with your card debit info on it and get your money back and get your amp from a reputable car audio shop and have them install it....all fixed..if its making noise on its own its only a matter of time before bang or fire!
