Re: Which head unit do you prefer?

What is navigating an iPod like with the Pioneer head units? I want to get one that will take media of an external HDD but I can imagine it being really horrible to find albums/tracks once you get a decent amount on there.
I have a Pioneer MP3 CD head unit at the moment and even with 700mb it gets ridiculous trying to remember/find where everything is, 160gb just wouldn't work unless it's been changed.

With the one Im running the head unit gives the the same menu system as the iPod has, Songs, Artist, Genre, etc
and just like the iPod you click into one and it brings up the next menu, basically it is just giving you a remote screen and control of the iPod so about 5 seconds playing with it and you will have it sorted.

Bonus I like is that it charges too, so if you have an iPod with a stuffed battery that wont hold charge just use that.

Re: Which head unit do you prefer?

JVC. Reknowned for making excellent audio gear, so I have a lot of faith in them. My one has bluetooth and a front USB input, as well as a functional EQ controller. Love it. Was running JVC 2-way speakers, but am now rocking DLS components.

Used to have a Pioneer headunit... easy to use, but its built quality just felt a little junky.

stereos are the same as any other car part, there are always different levels to suit different people's needs

we don't all drive around with Spoon B18 race engines... sometimes a pod and kingys are enough
Alpine and Pioneer have such a good reputation, because out of all the high end units, they're generally the cheapest and easiest to get our hands on over here. but obviously for most people, there are a lot of cheaper, possibly easier to use, options out there

Re: Which head unit do you prefer?

yip, they're really good for SQ, but that's not quite how SPL works
you're definitely on the right track though. i'd recommend having a chat to the guys at Pauls Audio, even just to get a feel for what's out there to suit your needs

if you have any other questions or need advice, we can help ya out too

Re: Which head unit do you prefer?

Pioneer a bit junky Chris, your Pioneer was a bloody nice unit?
Currently have a KDC-X7529 Kenwood which has all the features I need, is easy to use and looks nice.

In recent times I have taken a shining to Blaupunkt, have fitted 3 of ours trucks with them and they are excellent. They all use ISO connectors (as do the 24v VDO's in the Hinos) so when they inevtiably break (our trucks eat headunits) it will be a simple plug and play affair.

Sounds good, any idea if it gives the same menu structure when just browsing MP3's on an external HDD? If so, I'm sold

Umm... yes actually they did put studies in. Until the man with the knowledge left. What they should have stuck with was paying that man.

The only two pieces of Sony gear I'd rock (apart from the XES M3 amps, or a full XES system):

Sony CDX-C90 transport

Sony XDP-4000X digital preamp

These units are a good 8 years old now. At the time they were up there with the Pioneer P1 combo, Clarion HX-D1/2, Alpine 7949 and whatever the associated processor was. Mean, mean gear... and yes that is an optical interface on the preamp.

u got it right.... !!! i luv it..... still not running its full potential.... once i got a better car, i might do it properly.

just alpine head with HDT amp (overseas brand, which is basically a copy of one of the european top end brand with burr-brown) and alpine type r front comp's.

better than my civic's stock system....

one of these is ftw @Shuttle mp3 player SD/USB - free 2G handy drive for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand
cheap, lightweight but functional. no cd bullshit (who uses CDs these days, they are soo 1999)
nothing to really fuck up on it cause theres no moving parts.
i have a newish panasonic mp3/wma cdplaya in my car, it was free so i cant complain. its pretty good and easy to use also.

hey... im still running cd.... hahahaha.

depending on what song u listen to, i guess. if u listen to jazz and into SQ, the ol' fashioned CD's are still the best digital form that's available.

MP3's still cannot catch the clarity of the high-definition CD's.... anyway, thats my thought.

Re: Which head unit do you prefer?

top end pioneer is better than alpine. JVC do good stuff but also a lot of weird surround soud crap that can be hard to integrate into a car
older
