Re: Performance tyre choice. Tyre shops opinions

Re001 gets a vote for me. We have 2 sets. One set on my holden and a set we ran on the Primera before changing the rims.

By far the best tyre I have driven on in a while other than semi slicks.

Any track days in there? How much tread you got left? I've got FK-452's, paid $190 a corner, 30k so far and probably 2-3mm on all 4 remaining. I think a good tire, but I'm on the look out.

Can anyone confirm this? Im debating on whether to get t1r's or Re001 for my mugen mags and Im actually more inclined to having better a better wear rate compared to traction as I do more on road/street driving then track.

I've always "heard" people say that RE001 were crap in terms of wear, is the t1r worst than it or better?

That seems like a good price, where were you quoted that? From the places I asked I was always quoted atleast another 20+% on top of that.

Re: Performance tyre choice. Tyre shops opinions

My Re001 are wearing pretty good, done around the 20,000K on them in the Holden and still got plenty left in them. On average the holden chews a set of tyres every 40,000 and I think the RE001 will do that.

The T1R has a similar treadwear rating to the RE001 - so in theory they should last a similar amount of time.

In my experience the T1R will outlast the RE001. As an aside, IMO the T1R is better in the wet than the bridgestone, but in the dry the RE001 pwns the toyo.

FWIW I'm currently on T1Rs, only because there is no RE001 in my size

Re: Performance tyre choice. Tyre shops opinions

jake here... you simply can not go past the Toyo RA1 as a cheap and very sticky tire - they will not completly die on roads either and work very well in the wet.

I can get you a set fitted for approx 180per tire

Re: Performance tyre choice. Tyre shops opinions

I find it strange how you got quoted a higher price for the DZ101s than the RE001s.

I have the RE001s on my EK, brilliant handling. I think they've done around 10,000kms on them, not many signs of camber wear. Still have to test them on the track.

I can't remember what I paid for them, but it was less than 1g (195/55). I think anywhere around the $200 mark per tire is the approx value for them (195/55).

Yeh go the RA-1 for budget price but very good performance on track.

Cheapest I ever got them 205/50/15 through wholesaler was $161.50 about 2 years ago.
AND NO I don't have a contact, that was through a mate of a mate.

$160-180 fitted is GREAT PRICE!!!!!!

Re: Performance tyre choice. Tyre shops opinions

I'v decided on the RA-1's, i'm just hunting around for the best price now.

Does anyone know if they are any good for drag racing? I intend to upgrade to a s80 box before night wars because im only spinning one wheel at the moment. Want to try and beat the time of my old eg6, i/h/e, federal 535 street tyres, 14.7 @147kph , 2.2 60ft

Oh yeah, and i see the mazda pro 7 series runs RA-1's aswell, on a 16" rim. Next season they are moving onto R888's.

Id go R888 personally, much better tyre for the extra $10-20 per tyre. A mate has a set thats done a couple of trackdays and around 8,000kms road use. They still have a wee bit of life left. All depends how hard you drive on em i suppose.

Agreed.

However, they do make them in 205/45/16. I have them on my DC2. They are a superb tyre. Definitely would purchase again.

in my experience NO

best I ever did with my RA1's was a 2.2 60ft no matter how hard i tried.
when you let pressure out of them the sidewall still sticks up high because tehy are a hard sidewall track tyre for going around corners so they spin up rather than grip. (however the rubber is still sticky compared to budget road tyres)

Also you need to try hard to get heat into them, and really they just aren't ideal when you have people next to you either matching or out launching you in there non semi slick tyres. (same cars same power)

Others have commented on the RA1 being crap at drags also. HOWEVER, they will be better than plenty of other road going budget shitter tyres.

Heaps of people have got the same or better 60fts from a decent high profile road tyre with the pressure let down.

My opinion anyways, if its all you have then use em at the drags, if you can ask around what others have had success with then try that.
