Driving around with stiff suspension is a good indication of how bumpy and shocking the roads are

It is true, most roads in NZ are crap. And the primary cause of it all is that trucks are to blame. They just rip the guts outta any road.

I didn't get to watch the show (stupid flatmates watching McLeod's Daughters). I agree that NZs roads are pretty poor on the whole, and there are DEFINITELY too many trucks on our roads, you can thank the crap railways for that. On the other hand, you always have to drive to the road. What I mean is, if it's shocking and bumpy then slow the fuck down! Blaming the roads can only go so far, in the end it all boils down to the driver. Hundreds of people drive each road every day without crashing, so it's clearly do-able.

A good example was when i was following a fairly modded WRX down SH27 (I think). There is one area where the road is pretty poor and because of his low springs he was only going at 80km/h. I bet he didn't crash.

That main thing is not the road surface. It is the poor alignment and road geometry. For example having a 50k corner in a 100k area straight after a blind crest.

On the program one guy said that other countries were impressed with our road surface technology. This is true. When I did a transport paper, we had a guest lecturer who was a roading engineer from Austin, Texas. He said that they were amazed at how we could keep trucks on the road with only a layer of bitumen and 10mm or aggregate, referring to some of our chipseal surfaces. He said (in a southern American accent): "From where I come from most people dont think you can make a road without 500mm of concrete". Just shows you how rich they are over there.

I bet their's last a lot longer tho! [like a lot of important things in this country] there is not enough money spent on maintaining our roads, or building new ones. I'm sure everyone here can think of an example where they have patched up a bad bit of the road and its worn out quicker than the rest of the road.

Yeah the rods are crappy roads built on crappy roads built uppon crappy roads they can only be so good if we go on like this! they put a patch here and a patch there and hope like hell they have a good road after all the patching. Reminds me a lot of windows realy a shitty system built uppon countless other shitty systems

youve gotta love those 50kph- corners after the crests with no warning eh they make driving fun! its things like that that give you the need to lower your car and get better brake pads and some slightly wider mags to support better and bigger tires

and then the cops go and ping us for it! isnt it just great
