while i agree with the new laws, i find the testing measures to be wide open for scrutiny. Testers are allowed to test in any way they choose. meaning, they can listen to your car at idle, at 3,000rpm, or rev the nuts off it. its totally up to the tester. there is no set testing procedure from the LTSA as far as ive seen.

ive replaced 4 mufflers this week, all on cars with straight through cannon style mufflers. not one of them came out sounding anywhere near what a factory car would have sounded like, and they all passed inspection.

really, find a tester who isnt an anal bastard, and keep going to them. most testers are good and understand that its impossible to get almost any car to the "factory standard" noise limit, as most used Jap imports have had their cats removed, which really doesnt help the noise level.

dont think petitioning the government is going to help. the government and local councils receive more complaints about vehicle exhaust noise than anything else. make your car as legal as possible and live with it. 95db for most cars is more than achieveable.

According to Neil Fraser 4cyl variable valve timing equipped cars ie. vtec, mivec are to be tested at 4800rpm. Even he thinks it's stupid that they test ours way higher than the rest.

It's only stupid in the sense that it ignores all the other variable valve timing engines out there - BMW's Vanos, Porsche's Vario Cam, Toyota's VVT-i, Ferrari's Variable Valve timing system ect ...

I have a 4.5" rps cannon on my civ, (plan to ditch it and get a performance exhaust soonish) and my Exhaust is loudest at 3-4k. it then changes upwards in pitch and therefore becomes quieter. It's the bass people hate most about noisy exhausts.

Re: solution to exhaust noise issues

Iv got out of a ticket by tell the police officer that MSNZ cars are exempt from the sound limit. Just had to pull out my club sport license to show him lol.

Got out of few things by doing that actually.
Stripped car. (didnt know its illegal.)
Lowered car.
Skidding in first gear in the wet on a hill.
Excessive rear camber. (didnt know it was illegal so now have the washer trick.)

Read my post on the last page.

You obviously haven't read your manual. Have a good read through Schedule A and you will know what you can and can't do.

But meh, if it worked I guess you can't complain.

Stripped interior's aren't illegal, nor do they require a LVVTA cert.

Exessive rear camber isn't illegal as per word, i'm pretty sure it doesn't say anything directly related to it in the VIRM. pay to check the LTSA website or a VIRM at your local testing station. But yeah the 4.5 degrees of negative camber/gangsta lean on the rear of your DA that induces some massive fwdorifto oversteer on those wet corners so joo can get y0 slide on, wont appeal to the police officer/wof inspector

Ditto. They are only illegal if you have exposed sharp points, and I believe also illegal if the stripping involves reducing the number of seatbelts from the number stated in the registration. IE, registered as a 4 seater but you remove the rear seatbelts. I have passed warrants with stripped rear, but still retaining the rear seatbelts. Nor does lowering require a cert, unless adjustable, or if heat/force is used to lower the car (ie, compressing or cutting.. but this is generally looked past).
