Twinloops too loud?

Has anyone out there recently gone for a wof with a twinloop and failed (or not) due to this new law? Starting 1st June, it means your car cant be over 90db at 4k rpm for 4 cylinders and 4.8k rpm for vtecs.

I've got a twinloop on my torneo and I wouldnt consider it loud but any means (it has a resonator and almost silent when cruising) yet the guy at the Adelaide Rd (wgtn) vtnz station thought a jet a was about to land revving it at 5k rpm, although this was true when he was showing me a sub 1.3l fiat punto revving to 3k rpm.

He also decided to take me up on my lowered suspension which is funny as my car has never received any attention from the police or any vtnz station for that matter. Besides the point, what have your experiences been? Is it likely to pass the LLV as is (im assuming its similar to jasma standards) or should i give the steel wool behind a flange trick a go)?

I think its obvious i was labelled when he smugly told me boyracers are ruining it for everyone, I quietly agreed with him.

Re: Twinloops too loud?

I just passed a wof last week at VTNZ with a full mugen twinloop, he commented on how quiet it was and how that was a nice change (as the 1972 V8 Falcon ute rolled up )

Re: Twinloops too loud?

A few years ago when I used to take my old GSR to get its WOF , I used to roll up some fine chicken wire and stuff it up the exhaust and still pass the wof with it sticking out the end by 100 mm .The old man running the shop used to laugh and say 'at least you tried' ,my how times have changed

Re: Twinloops too loud?

Ya I passed wof's from two different places with my TRR twin loop in my teg and only had one large/long resonator. However my test was done up to 4900 rpm or so and I had my vtec set to 5200 rpm so I didn't go into mad vtec

Re: Twinloops too loud?

I also just past a warrant no comments with my Full Twin loop System in place.

In the case of a genuine Mugen Twin Loop Exhaust I wonder if you could argue that it is option OE equipment anyway?

As in even in NZ right now if you needed to replace the exhaust and got one from Honda NZ I could buy either the "standard" or Mugen option.

Don't know ... just a thought..

Re: Twinloops too loud?

hey actually yeah.. thats a point its a mugen exhaust system which is a honda factory option from the production line.. send the wof guy to look at hondas Online part retail direct.. (worth a try)

other than that tell him that the car had mad intake noise making the exhaust seem loud..

Re: Twinloops too loud?

My type-r with full mugen system and twin loop gave me a nice little grren sticker on the second day i owned it!
Pulled over at 6am on my way to work on the tristram ave on ramp,
cop says "new reulations your exhaust needs to be certed....."
$80 for the green sticker warrant,$150 fine.
Crazy thing is I took it to Neil Fraser (a local lvv certifier) and he ran his meter over it and it is well within the legal limits!
So now if i want to contest the ticket I have to pay $170 to get it certified and stamped, whats the F#$kng point!!!!!!

guilty before innocent, its the NZ way....

YOU have to prove your legal, not make the cops prove your illegal.$170 for peace of mind that you cant get any more tickets for noise? id gladly pay that...

Re: Twinloops too loud?

IF it was just $170 to certify it and they were prepared to be acommodating on the warrant/fine I would not have an issue!
But for a cop that is probably ten years my junior treating me like a diesel drifting, flat peak wearing hood rat, really irritates at 6am
I have had another resonator added and now you can't hear the exhaust over the bark of the intake!?!
No doubt intakes will be next on the revenue gathering hit list....

Re: Twinloops too loud?

Cheers for the comments guys, might give it a quick test on the db meter otherwise il look into other options to quiten it down. Its only a trr so cant prove its factory option but good response nonetheless. Its a dam pain in the ass because its not even loud but will be worth the $150 to get them off my back

Re: Twinloops too loud?

Ive got a twinloop and I tested my car at work today with out new db meter, first time failed because vtec came on at 4800, but i changed it up and it passed at 91.7 db

They say the packing inside the mugen twinloops decay after time so they get louder with age, so its worthwhile getting a new one from honda if you're after a new exhaust!

Re: Twinloops too loud?

I passed my WOF on Wednesday with undertank 2.25 system, two 18" resonators, and a 4" N1 muffer. Just had the silencer tacked in place with a few welds and all is good. Is an easy solution for people who can't be bothered getting a new system made.

Re: Twinloops too loud?

Ive got full mugen exhaust system and its quiet as! Infact my gf just took off in her 1.3 auto carbed civic and that was louder. So I guess my wof in a couple weeks should be interesting.

Re: Twinloops too loud?

I believe the point of the twin loop system is to make it quieter

Re: Twinloops too loud?

i've got a twin loop on my type r and its pretty quiet except when giving the car some juice. was on full throttle in vtec the other night and saw a cop buttoned off when I saw him, still got a fine for going too fast but left the car idling when he come over and he didnt even look twice at the exhaust, he thought it was someone else that made all that noise (because twin loop is so quiet under normal circumstances). Good thing about vtec and the twin loop is very quiet under vtec, very loud in vtec. pass warrants fine too.

Re: Twinloops too loud?

I've followed a guy with an ITR with a twinloop and raced a Caldina GTT and it was really loud, like same as N1 straight through exhaust. I think it depends on the condition of the muffler and resonators.
