This is not confirmed just what I have read. The show scene has been on the decline in NZ for a long time. I guess money better spent elsewhere like australia where there is more following.. |

The street scene in NZ is just too big, and I know of a number of people who would rather take their cars out cruising those weekends instead of entering in the show. Not to mention drifting and dragging has taken off somewhat, and become more popular than showing.

It certainly put me off going to them...Who want to go to a show where they are sponserd by only a couple of companys that are tied into a deal for xxx amount of years and you never get to see anything new. My want out of a car show aside from cool cars is to see a variety of NEW products from NEW suppliers and New trends......not the trends that mag and turbo/magwarehouse dictate. A company I used to work with when I first came to auckland Wanted to have a display of their range of wheels at the nationals show n shine but were declined because mag and turbo were principal sponsers and they were there promoting the stuff they sell in volume. Autosalon was a great concept but having that as well as the nationals (north and south island) ....well theres only so many show cars and so many car fiends. I say bring back the original NATS that wernt a massive sales pitch.......

it would also take in excess of $300,000 to put on an event, once you take in the 9-10 months of work. americarna and beach hop take almost a year of getting council approvals, and if there were ANY problems(no matter how small) they throw so much red tape up its not funny. as an example if you wanted a beach hop style event for jap enthusiasts, with an expected turnout of 500 plus cars, over a 3 day weekend, expect for a huge battle to get the event just to the advertising stage. your main problem would be young people, cars, alcohol, cruising etc, the police wouldnt want a bar of it. and there would be no way you could say it would be alcohol/fight free, let alone all the skids, illegal racing that people would do.

IMO Autosalon dug it's own hole, it became more about money driven sponsors and who could blow the most dollars on their fanta mercedes/silvia/civic thing that you'd sent into a shop rather than what you'd done at home with late nights/weekend over a beer with the boys. The atmosphere (to me) was about catching up with people you hadn't seen in ages (due to being stuck under their cars?) or friends from the internet and enjoying the fresh stuff each other had done to their rides and being proud of what you had achieved, rather than nowadays about holding grudges against the guy standing on the podium who obviously had the biggest bank loan. Heck I wasn't even IN autosalon but I remember back in the day coming to see you guys at the events and how humble it all was. I guess to put it in a Honda "omgitsagurrrl" Horndog perspective, It's all well and great to want silicon city chicks where they all have the same pair of implanted jubblies, bottle blond hair, plastic tan and putty perfect makeup, but sometimes you get sick of going and seeing/ramming the same shit over and over again, it get's repetitive quite quick. ![]()
