wow thats a sqaut looking engine.. rods are so short and pistons so big 8O, kind aalways knew they were over sqaure, but man its amazing to look at, and the piston skirts.. so short

edit: holy crap the 2005 motor made 928ps.. and i cant imagine a lrage drivetrain loss from these cars but even at 15% thats still a whopping 788hp from a 3 litre = thats 262hp per litre 8O -- and it only weighed 97kg.. now thats lite

rumour is that the current bmw motor runs a cam-less, that right, a cam-less valvetrain. each valve is electronically controlled. each valve has a solenoid on top. the powerband is where-ever you want it.

no vavle-train loss through the 4 rotating camshalfs.

amazing no??

Those are some freaking sweet pieces of metal lol. Ive got a piston from Denny Hulme's Brabham F1 car which won the Monaco GP in 1967. Some of those power figures are just ridiculous for such small displacement, but i guess thats whats possible when millions upon millions are spent on r&d.

If that is the case, that's some pretty impressive technology improvements over the past several years!

I remember reading about that not to long ago, it was a 'In Theory' idea at the time, because they hadn't figured out how to make a perfect seal and make what ever was making the seal strong enough, heat resistant and light enough to still be able to move at speed!

Think what that sort of technology will open up in terms of both power and emissions!

It will be good for everthing. You could get better economy out of things like earth moving equipment and construction machinery.

I'm wondering though, how often would they need to be replaced, and what happens when the solanoid fails? Will they jamn in posistion?

I'm guessing they will test and test and test, figure out the life span and then replace them at a set interval like a cam belt.

Oh right - Still have valves, just not cams. Still, epic.

Active valve trains have been around for years. Mostly limited by speed and linearity.

I didnt think they were allowed in F1?

That crazy rod is for a W engine?

A 'W' engine is pretty much 2 'V' engines beside each other.

The crazy rod is a trophy

Im sure they didnt built it specifically to be a trophy. Its a piece of something.

I reckon it belongs in a 3 bank W engine something along the lines of this:

Or this:

Apparently Caterpillar is developing a camless Diesel truck engine, would make for a totally flat 'torque curve'
