As much as you will want to spend the cash on mods, I can say from experience, spend it on a good alarm and some security film on your windows first!!!

My previuos ride was broken into 3 times before eventually being stolen and written off on the 4th incident. Each time they pilaged the stereo and whatever else was lying around as well as smashing the window (not before trying and failing with the lock leaving it useless and paint scratched) and leaving a ****ing mess. And when it was eventually stolen they were kind enough to kerb the wheels, bald the tyres and blow the engine as well...
Insurance always helps but there are hidden costs such as trim repair, devaluation, increased premiums etc. and they will always scam you to try to pay as little as possible.
Still, thats the price you pay for owning a desirable vehicle I suppose.

cars - not quite, after having one of my cars parked outside akl uni a couple of days later i noticed the passenger lock was a bit munted but still worked, like someone tried but got disterbed.

House - yes, about 10 years or so ago, think they didn't turn on the lights cause they took funny stuff like taking a watch of the drawers but leaving the cash that was sitting on the other side, or took cans of baked beans (yes thats right) but left the chips, took the beer but left the liquor, took the vcr but left the cds and stereo . . .

Nowdays i just alarm everything and go for the stealth look, even if they still get away with breaking in at least it has made a bit noise in the mean time

Yes i have always wanted to plant a car somewhere dodgy, plant a big fat wallet on the seat or dash, and wait till some theif comes along. Then I jump out of my hiding place and beat the shit out of him with a bat or tie him up, strip him naked and drop him in the middle of town. Ofcourse I would have to wait till he actually tries to pic the lock or smash the window to give him the benefit of the doubt that hes just having a look inside.

you would also need some sort of proof like video taped evidence of them breaking in (not of you beating the crap out of them though) in case they slapped a law suit on you for grevious bodily harm

got a good alarm/2 stage imobliser/bump sensors striaght away
and also always park in good lighting/public places.
don't leave valuables in the car/or on show including head unit and and other sounds
at least it reduces the chances

Yup.

 Stereo taken from my first car, a Familia, completely rooting the centre fascia - 1991.
  Window smashed in my old Sierra, nothing taken but I got the last window like it in NZ (it was an XR4x4 and the windows were unique) - 1997.
   Another window smashed in the Sierra, this time a briefcase taken. Got it all back, including a cheque book but took 8 weeks to get another window from England - 1998.
    Window smashed on the Commodore. The knob-gobblers couldn't even get a door open AFTER smashing the window because the car's got deadlocks - Early morning, Christmas Eve, 2002 (which completely ruined my Christmas Eve, which I spent at Smith and Smith in Manukau).
     Just waiting for the next attempt after last weekend's tailing.

Don't skimp on security. A few hundred now can save a whole lotta heartache later on.

My RX7 got broken into and everything in it was taken.
Fortunately this was only some tapes(Pre nice stereo days), pens and a cigarette lighter.
The fuel filler was opened up but nothing else was done.

If they had been able to get into the Econovan parked right behind it, there's no doubt it would have disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

Yep, 4 times. All by retards apparantly. The only time I've had something major stolen was the 3rd attempt, where they got my Xplod 6x9s on the rear parcel tray (just took the whole fucking tray damn them) and my cellphone, only time I've ever left it in the car.
The 4th time was yesterday. They shattered my passenger window (haven't checked the lock yet though, might have to have a look) but didn't get anything apart from 30 cents in 5 cent pieces. Fucking dropkicks.

Definately gotta be alarmed and dangerous.

Yes

3 Times I think it comes from having a well modded car, having stuff other people want etc...

1st time just had smashed window, 2nd time car was being fixed (panelbeater) had wheels and all my sounds (2x15"s, Amp, Head unit, Cables etc) 3rd Time was last month window smashed had Sub and amp taken plus my hoodie and a few cd's.

Pisses you off but better than losing the whole car, I think if your car is reasonably well "known" then its easy for peeps to know whats inside etc...

I am waiting for the enevitable, i go to Manukau tech a couple of times a week and so have to park on the road during the day. Didn't have that "please break into me" look before but now its lowered a bit it has a different look, and seeing as it is in Otara . . . not that i am stereotyping here or anything

ok, let me pose another question sort of on the same topic, but is a theory of mine - of those of you who have had them broken into, how many had tints?

Oh btw for the three breakins in my car 2 were with old Uniden Alarm. Last time was with my pager output alarm...worth around $1000.

No alarm stops a smash and grab theif

they took a Nintendo64, a radar detector, my sony head unit, a 15" sub and some money.... about $1500 gone

second time was in the carpark, i was at auckland uni...
they fucked my key hole up, so i ended up shaving my keyholes.
