Went to change my MTF today...

Undid the plug that drains the 'box and guess what came out?

Nothing 8O

Absolutely nothing 8O 8O

Did I come close to killing a greabox or what? Seeing as how I was changing it for Monday's track day

:!:

Of course I undid the right bolt! If I didn't, there's somewhere that's not the gearbox with 2 1/2 litres of MTF in it

I noticed it had started whining at a track day back in March, but haven't really driven it since so I guess I'm lucky huh?

I had also noticed changing down from 3rd to 2nd was crunching like a bastard so decided to change it.

Looks like just in time 8O

If its crunching then its most likely too late... New oil will help, but won't fix the gearbox

But it was in the rain at Puke, did four or five laps only, and it only crunched twice so

*crosses fingers*

Then it was sweet for town driving.

so you undid the bottom square bolt that you need to put a 3/8 ratchet into to undo it?
Nothing came out well their would only be like 100ml in there maybe? and the rest that is stuck on the parts.

easy way to kill the box especially racing. (could have made your car a little faster while it lasted tho with no oil to slow it down )

Come on guys it's not like the box seized or anything. If it dies it dies. The Chad said, it may already be too late for the box. If it is, it blows. If it's not, it won't.

Not going to stop me giving it death on Monday!

Ok now one question. Since you have had this car have you changed the oil?

Gearboxes don't burn oil

So the last owner drained it and never topped it up, or you filled it with 2.5L last time and its leaked out cause of a hairline crack somewhere or a leaking seal?

Yeah - good point!

You should have MTF everywhere down there if it has been leaking out. I mean coating the back of the box, engine, underside, etc. Friggin mess everywhere.

Last owner drained it by the looks - I never thought to check it (my bad) until now. Since it's parked in the shed usually I would have noticed 2.5 litres of oil all over the floor or at least some sort of leak. Underside of the gearbox is clean too, and inside the clutch housing looks ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Might steam clean the underside just to make shure though.

Hopefully it'll hold together until the close gear kit arrives After that it won't matter any more

You'd know - I had a moderate leak in my BMW's transmission and only lost about half the fluid (it only came out under load, especially at the track - not sitting in the garage) and it covered everything halfway back under the car.

Should replace the gearbox oil before every track day or at least every second track day, thats if you drive it really hard.

umm just a thought does jacking it up at the front cause the oil to run to the back of the box? im not sure as i did mine with 2 jacks and raised it level so i could get the right amount back in etc using the level indicator hole..
