Meeting each other at meets

Does anyone have the same issue with our meets as I do?

I find that everyone stands in the same little groups and talks amongst themselves. The other day I was at Long Bay Beach and was parked near a NZ Mitsi meet - not only did they all have a good chat but they played a game of soccer or touch or something involving a ball. Why aren't our meets like this??

I went to the meet at Kelly Tarltons the other day and tried to start a conversation with people I didn't know (which I figured was the point of having a car club in the first place) and got ignored .

I don't want to get anyone shitty - just want to see if anyone else experiences the same problems as I do....

yeah i found the same at my first 2 or so meets i went to.

but it gets better, i mean meeting guys that give me shit like pnut and stuff was pretty good.

but doing something like a game of soccer or touch would be awesome at a meet i think, get something happening.

ok my two cents.... I think our meets are fine maybe the mitzi ones are different cause they all know each other and are a smaller crowd than nzhondas.... we have new people coming all the time and you will find if you make conversation with people they will talk back, i dont have a problem with meets as i go round everyone and have a good chat, some people are shy and most do go to meets to meet up with the people they know and thats there reason to go, but they also dont mind talking to newbies, just walk up to a group say hi and have a chat... and i think playing a game of soccer at kelly taultons at 9.30 at night isnt exactly practical, we go to talk cars and show our babys off
plus if people dont like the meets dont come

Yeah, I understand how you feel, I get the same feeling in Chch. Maybe it's just because I'm not part of the group that has people that already know everyone. I know a few people, but aside from that I dunno, I don't find it very easy to talk to complete strangers when they're already in a big group with their friends...

Yeah -Im in the same boat as vtec-gal. I noticed the same thing.

I was at the NZMMC (Mitsi Club) meet at long bay in the weekend - and the atmosphere was great. Everyone was keen to talk with everyone else - and a game of rugby was thrown in too. Awesome. Just a really positive vibe. No-one giving any crap to non-mitsi owners either (we rolled up in a DA6 and a DC2)

As for a lot of the NZHonda's meets I have been to they do seem a bit anti. People split of into these little groups (usually of the people they came with) and dont seem in a hurry to make conversation with anyone out of their little "groups". Seldom has there been great interest shown in looking at other's cars. Never had a game of rugby played that i've seen. Starting to wonder what the meets are for? I also don't really appreciate people giving me shit about my car either. Sure I don't own a Honda at the moment, but I doesn't mean I dont support Honda's - if that were the case I wouldn't be there...

Perhaps we need to make the meets a bit more social. Organise a BBQ and a game of touch or something. Get everyone involved...

Remember boys and girls, at the end of the day the reason we are all here is because we all share the same love of cars. Lets keep it that way...

yeah i hear you guys eh. it does seem to be that way a rather anti- social feeling at the meet i went to (aaages ago, havnt been to one since) i think we need to get some sort of social activity hapening. or have someone that ralleys everyone up and says welcome to the such and such meeting. where do we want to cruse to tonite or whatever happens to be on the agenda.

something needs doing anyway IMO its clearly a problem for more than a coupple of us!

I think we just need to pass arround a few J's thats a social activity and should stop us getting speeding tickets he he just kidding Or am I !!

the meets that you guys went to I assume were Spur Of The Moment Meets (SOTMM) which were only organised maybe 3 hours beforehand and is not usually that big and so I guess people tend to break up into their little usual groups for a chat. More planned meets like cruises and dyno days etc. were bigger and i've met lots of new people like that.
However i did meet some new people at the last SOTMM that came up and talked to me, we dont bite... that hard  There is always something to talk about ie. what youve done to your car... future plans for it... yackity smackity...

I know what you guys mean, and there are some people like that. But this is a BIG club, we've got all sorts in here. I know quite a few people from here, but I didn't know anyone to start with. You've just got to pluck up the courage to say hello. Last non-sotmm I went to a ended having a big chat with some people from up north that I hadn't met before, I just went up to them and said hello, asked about their car.

If you see someone hanging around alone or in a small group, just try that, or if everyone's in a big group just try and bust into the circle! With a club this big you are guaranteed to meet some people you like as well as some you don't.

But if you're too scared to even get out of your car there's not much we can do!

Im agree with whats her name.

If its hard to have a better time (i.e do more social activities) at 9:00pm on a sunday night, have it earlier. Most of the meets i've heard about or been to have been at night, which at times is a cool atmosphere but shouldnt be the bench mark for all of them imo.

Comparing the last few meets i've been to, the mitsi one stated was alot larger. From what i can see the proportion of people "members" of this club, and the turnouts of cars/pple dosent match.

Im sure someone will have a "spur of the moment thought" at 7:00am on a sat some time soon......

Until then maybe we should think about organising another MEGA MEET

Maybe something to do with the average age of the members at meets ? NZH and Toyspeed would probably have the youngest average age i would imagine ? ... and in geeeeneral young would mean prolly less likely to approach strangers and attitudes may be more stand off-ish ?

Just an idea

This is the real problem - and I have witnessed it first hand.

I was at the meet referred to and the real problem was when we approached other members to have a chat and get to know them we were dismissed and ignored. Not a positive response. Not a positive attitude. NOT A POSITIVE MEET!!!

We weren't "to scared to get out of our cars" - I am a very outgoing person and I will talk to anyone. I was with a group of five or six people and we were all the same. Made the effort but were pushed aside. Its when I am ignored that I am not impressed...

I am probably just raving on about something small here - but it seems this is a real problem for a lot of members here...

I've found the bigger meets can be a bit like that, like hte big hamilton one we had I didnt get to talk to any of the taupo guys, altho that probably had more to do with the police constantly harassing us! Sometimes people do stay in their little groups but people are like that, just think back to school with the "popular" people, the nerds, the sporty jocks, etc. A big social meet where there's somthing more that sitting around in a car park would be a good idea to help break the ice.

The Wellington ones aren't too bad (if a little small). Everyone's still a bit shy but that's to be expected if a new bunch of strangers turn up to each meet. We have the odd SOTM karting event every now and then, or at least the other guys do - I'm usually on pager and can't go too far.

Try turning up being at least 5 years older than everyone else and see what sort of reception you get. My first meet Vent and Lith looked at me like I was a cop.

It'll change as you get to know a few people and become a "regular." The problem I have is that I suck at remembering people's faces and normally only recognise Ebola, PizzaBoy, Asia and Lith (and a couple who don't post any more). All you young people look the same to me...

Yea i dunno aye. been to a few NZhonda meets. One really big ones years ago was great but yea i agree we tend to have out own little groups.

I went to Long bay with my mitshi sunday, never met any NZMMC pl b4.. they were sweet as, very positive and welcoming...especially seein im a shy guy it was all good.
And yea i agree with what was said b4, no non mitshi bitchin... quite a few non mitshi cars rocked up so yea.

Its hard makin conversation with ppl urve never met and tryin to introduce urself. The MMC boys were all sweet so i guess just keep it in mind guys. It can be a bit difficult and feel like a dick sumtimes aye.

My 2.5cent

It's just the same shit, if you not in the 'in group' I.E know the mods personally or brown nose, no one wants to bother talking to you. Many of which try and make some smart ass comments for some unknown reason.
I wonder why NZH has a rep for it 'least friendilness' attitude outside of the club, well it's frigging obvious!
Back int he day NZH meets were huuge, then less and less people started appearing, go figure
