New Forum Forums Feedback

Just in light of the threads that have been coming up lately I thought I'd post up the list of the forums that we intend to have available for everyone once our new site goes live, to stop those threads from coming up, and to get some feed back from you guys/gals.

Section

__________________________________________

Just to cover a few things, no, we won't be having model specific forums. We don't really have the user base for it, and a lot of things cross over. Yes, the sub forum sections for the meets are blatantly stolen from Toyspeed. Any moderator can authorise pending replies/posts, so they won't take that long to appear.

In theory we could have as many sub forums for as many different things as you wanted, some of these are good ideas and some of them are bad. What these forums don't do how ever is actually stop people from posting things in the wrong place, that will always happen, so we'd rather have a "less is more" attitude towards it.. We've already added over 10 more forums with the above layout.

So yeah - Would appreciate feedback, / etc, what other forums should exist, if you think some are a bad idea etc.

Yep, fully, and I'm guilty of contributing to that spam, but if you've ever tried to read like a 25 page build thread from start to finish, it's a nightmare.

We'll see how it goes at first anyhow.

edit - I assume that by having the build thread forum where it is, that only NZHondas members will be able to view them?

Not in the immediate version of the forums, what you see above is what you will see in the forums. But there is talk of something along those lines.

From what I have seen, 10 posts per page. But I am sure that can be changed very easily.

Not using "Powered by vBadvanced CMPS v2.2.1 (vB 3.6)" by chance are you?

Ozhondas sounds very similar.

imagine how many pages Hayce's build threads will be now!!!

also will there be any forums that aren't visible to the public, or will they just not be able to post in them, like it is at the moment?

I'll check this when I get time, but I think you can turn off inline images in your profile.

That's a CMS package for vBulletin, we're not going to be using a CMS, at least not from the get go.

The defaults will be set the same as this forum, but you can change how many posts per page you want in your profile.

The permissions will be the same as what they are now, guests can view everything, but can not post.

Nope - Currently the last thing we're waiting on is something third party, so it's out of our control. When I do have a solid date on that I'll be posting up another topic regarding memberships.

Does the Meets section really need to be split up?
maybe you could just add an 'expiry date' so that the thread is automatically moved to the past meets section after the event

sometimes its good being able to see all the meets around the country, so if you're traveling around you can see if anything's on. And if its just for planning future meets then there'll only ever be a dozen or so threads there at a time anyway

There's a couple of things that will make the system work which haven't been mentioned, but they do really need to be split up.

It's just to encourage people to post up pictures and still chat about the meet after it's happened - I just don't think the current system works all that well with them all being in one forum covering such a large area.

I always thought with regard to build threads, (and some people do this allready) Its a lot easier to read if the original post is edited each time with an update. It saves heaps of time going through each page to find an update; you can just click on the thread and all info so far is all in a line.

just an idea though

so each regional forum will have current meets at the top and older ones at the bottom etc?
I dunno... i reckon it works fine as is, as long as once meets have happened they're moved to 'past meets'. People will post up after the meet as long as you realise its more than likely just going to turn to spam, and not lock it because of that

Threads will be ordered exactly the same, by last post..

The problem with it as it is though is it's up to a moderator to move the thread, the way it'll be it'll be up to the thread starter to change the 'status' of the thread from a current to a past meet, etc.

It doesn't work fine as it is IMO. Being able to go into your area, look at the top and see if anything is happening, is a much easier system. Instead of having to filter through the thread titles and find your meet area... and for all you know, it might have already passed and been missed by a moderator before shifting to the past meets section.

We don't care if it turns to spam after the meet, or even whilst planning the meet... I don't recall the last time a meets thread was locked. The only ones in the meets section I can find is where 3 threads were talking about a meet, and I was asked to lock them and refer them to one main thread. Also a few where the OP ended up getting flamed... but hey~ there was a reason.

RE:build thread system

for the longer builds it turns into this

now say I only updated one post
http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2151461&page=1

now instead of waiting XX minutes for one page to load... with 400+ pics...
looking for one single update 1-2pics and having to wait again for 400+ pics to load before you get to see the most recent pics is a right PITA

its far easier for the OP to make a TOC on the 1st post with links to watever page with only 5-6 pics

and feedback by the rest of the users is in its relevant place in the thread

on toyspeed, i find i have to click back and forth, looking at dates of a post then backtracking back to the build thread to find out wat the hell they are talking about

the other alternative is to posting thumbnail links to pics... but small pics are weak IMO

my $1.02
