are all the old threads going to still be around on the new forum or are we starting afresh?

There is nearly 900,000 posts on this forum in 150,000 different threads. We can't be selective about which ones we're taking over.

Ok, and no option to start fresh bar threads/post in last 12 months or something?

Doesnt bother me either way, just a suggestion...

i'm sure we don't need all 150 pages of off topic threads... but if its easier just to transfer over the whole lot, then they might as well

they've got enough work to do already as it is

and i still say i'm right about the meets threads... but i look forward to being proven wrong

It is often good to have old threads to refer back to... make quotes. There are other reasons too, but yea.

Off-Topic threads used to get pruned when they were over a year old, we turned that off after maybe 6 months of having it turned on because people didn't like the idea.

Searching is going to be a lot easier in the new forum, and there is even a function to find similar threads. The more we have the better, even if they are just Off-Topic.

Think about what we talked about three years ago in Off-Topic with the election coming up etc? Lame example, but some times there are serious discussions that are worth keeping.

The new forums also have user-definable parameters for the duration of threads displayed, so if you want you can set it to "Posts in the last month" and hey presto, e-nirvana.

So just because the whole database is there doesn't mean you have to wade through it.

One other suggestion. Not sure if it is possible. But can you setup in the search side to search for threads started by a member.

I have tryed in the past to find a thread by someone. I know what it was about and who posted it instead I get every thread known to man that the target user posted in where someone said the key word.

everything sounds pretty bloody good!

so any idea as to when the new forums will be up? is there going to be a long 'downtime' while the new forum is being setup or whatever?

Can you have it so when an email is sent telling you of a PM that it contains the text content of the PM?
Saves having to login to check a PM that doesn't need a reply.
(not that it affects me I'm always logged in )

Not a stupid idea, but sorry, that's not available in the default config.
