GIFs arent smaller, try GIF a 500kb JPEG and see what size you get, GIFs arent meant for photos which i imagine are mainly what users upload

What size image are you compressing? And how do you mean keep the resolution up? Like I said, a gif can only be 256 colours, jpeg is in the millions.

I've got photoshop, and I use the "Save For Web" option, where you can choose out of jpeg/gif/png. There is also an option in that to see what your image would look like in each of those formats, and it gives you the file sizes of each, jpeg comes out on top every time, unless your image is tiny (like, 128x128), which most photos aren't.

It's only a small JPG going from ~125kb down to around 50-60kb, it does only have a few colours (a few reds, blacks, silvers & blues)

I'll have another look tonight and I'll try a few things to see if I can see what you guys are talking about.

Oh the size is 800x600, and when I say resolution I mean image qual & physical pixelXpixel size (guess I shoulda said that)

In the past I've found I have to drop the P X P & qual down on a JPG to make it fit (and I'm talking tiny images too, like 300x200 sizes) and when you have a reasonable qual, the pic is tiny as, alternatively turn up the P X P & drop the qual and it looks crap.

Is there any way you could increase the allowed image size? or allow off site hosting? (But I guess that brings in problems with people being dicks & having 1600x1200 pics)

heres an example

take this lovely photo i took a few weeks ago

http://profiles.nzhondas.co.nz/misc/jpegtest/orig.jpg (769kb)

saved as JPEG at 42% compression http://profiles.nzhondas.co.nz/misc/...jpeg_42%25.jpg (225kb)

saved as GIF at 42% compression http://profiles.nzhondas.co.nz/misc/.../gif_42%25.gif (460kb)

saved as GIF at 100% compression attempting to get similar file size to JPEG effort http://profiles.nzhondas.co.nz/misc/...gif_100%25.gif (252kb, (didnt get to 225kb))

as we can see jpeg is better for photos, while gif is better for not-photos

Off site hosting = Bad, means lots of ways that you can hack unless we put in the extra effort to make sure whats being linked is JUST an image. ie, There was a hack in phpbb a while back, with a bit of extra coding in the [img][/img] tags it was posible to collect user/passwd information from anyone who loaded the image...

50kb is massive, no one should have a need for any larger than that

Alot of thought has been put into the way images are handled, and I don't really think its going to change...

On the new profiles site however people will be able to upload more than one image.

For some fucked up reason I always thought that GIF's were smaller than JPG's. I stand corrected.
