Re: What gauges?

i would say boost and oil pressure.. thats just me though cos pressure is mainly what kills motors not temps.. and oil temps on hondas are never going to go through the roof.. unless it gets full on rape for 10-15 minutes straight..

Re: What gauges?

Im using boost and oil pressure, for the street oil pressure probly be ideal, but if your intending to go track I'd suggest also getting a oil temp gauge/oil cooler set up going on

Re: What gauges?

your car has a stock oil pressure switch....

water temp and oil temp would be the 2 I would suggest assuming you have boost already.

Comes on about 5psi though if just talking about the factory warning light. You see that its probably to late.

have to disagree here from experience... many people say one you see it to late, but,,,,,, my daily eats oil like theres no tomorrow, and i oly know when to put oil in when the oil light comes one, sometimes i drive for a month more with the oil light coming on sporadically, at its worst when you break ever so slightly the oil light comes on for 2-3 seconds, so you have to have a huge following gap and not break hard

anyway point is the oil light should be a fine warning, but as soon as you see it, do something about it, not like me.... the one time it took just under 4 litres to get it back on the dipstick... wonder how much londer the motor will last

Re: What gauges?

the only time the factory oil pressure light would come on too late is if you blew a big hole in your sump and all the oil dissapeared in a second, id have to agree that oil temperature is more useful. think about it rationally, if you were on a track for instance and your oil pres light came on you would notice it, if all of a sudden the needle in your oil pres gauge dropped you more than likely wouldnt notice unless it was mounted on the dash board in front of your face

F'n lol.

The factory light does come on at about 5psi and below, if you want to run high rpm and be sitting on 10psi of oil pressure without knowing that is fine, but not for me.

Clogged oil pick up, lazy oil pump easily could have you doing the above.

I could go on and on as to why I think a good oil pressure gauge is important but can't be fugged.

Re: What gauges?

agreed but high rpm and turbo dont exactly go hand in hand on most applications, i know my oil pump is fresh and couldnt imagine what would be in my oil to clog up feeds, if your engine is more on the tired side a pressure gauge would be prefered but because i know everything in my motor is fresh i have a boost gauge and a water temp.. thats it. if you wanted to be entirely pedantic there are a whole series of gauges you could run..

Re: What gauges?

Negative on the oil temp.

Having the oil pressure guage will allow you to gauge any problems that *may* be starting to happen to the engine, and will give you good warning to look into whats happening.

Re: What gauges?

Damn just typed up a decent reply and then somehow logged out and lost it.

By high RPM I am talking anything over 5k, with low oil pressure it wont last long in a highly stressed enviroment.

Its a funny debate this when you consider you have an actual water temp gauge from the factory, but as we all know there shit! Yet people see the oil pressure warning light as being sufficient

Ah each to there own

yea definately agree with that, i just have more faith than i have gauges lol i only have a water temp because my factory gauge struggles to get off the mark with my cooling system, and if i let it get warm then drove at 100km/h with the fan on it would go back to cold. if it wasnt for my super radiator i wouldnt even have water temp

Re: What gauges?

I would go with Boost and Oil Pressure as the main ones and then Oil Temp and Water temp as the secondary.

I dont know about other people but Id like to know if there is a problem with the pressure before it gets to 5psi or if there is a fluctuation in pressure say its dropping 10psi for some reason - but not low enough for the light to come on. In my cars, I always first fit an Oil Pressure guage, then water then oil temp. Its just a piece of mind to know at the first instance of a potentually "deadly" problem.

I dont trust the warning light alone, nor do I trust the stock water temp guages, heck sometimes I dont even trust the fuel guage.

Each to their own tho
