cool, so what size oil lines are best? is there much drop in oil pressure as a result of installing an oil cooler? were their good gains to be made?

put a reliable gauge on it and see if you need a cooler before spend ~$500 on one...

How would I manage that?

Do the majority of you guys out there run oil coolers?

I didn't.

How would you manage what? If you mean the gauge, tap the sump and stick the sender in it. Could 'T' into the line on the back of the block for the oil light but that's more commonly used for pressure and is not as accurate for temp.
Could also use a sandwich plate but sump is best.

Ive never bothered with coolers. Any car ive had with temp gauges never got to hot. Only time Id suggest is under track racing condition where the car has the chance to start heating the oil badly. Realistically, on the road with half legit driving, youd never get the car loaded up more than 10seconds at WOT anyway.

The heat of the turbo esentailly burning the oil,

Proof is the fact that I have had a turbo civic for 8 years now and with a large oil cooler the oil stays nice and clean looking for way longer

Is the cooler before the turbo? Good oils are turbo tested so they dont actually burn once in contact with the turbo.

I've got a nice blue Greedy kit for the DC2 I got from japan bit over a year ago. Uses a sandwich plate and a thermostat so oil doesn't go through the radiator until warmed up. Just haven't had time to fit it.
According to my defi(oil temp and pressure sensors mounted in a oil filter sandwich plate with sensor holes), my oil temp usually sits in 96-98 normal driving, water temps around mid 80's. Even when sitting idling on a hot day so the water hits 100 for the far to tick on, the oil still sits high 90's. It can go 105ish on spirited road driving. On the track, I can go about 7-8 mins before it's 125c. I know oils are supposed to be fine till closer to 150, but I still don't like that amount of heat. That's running Royal Purple 10w30 btw.

So based on those temps, unless you're doing track work, it's not necessary.

If I manage to find an afternoon to fit it sometime i'll post up new temperatures.

on the street i wont wee more than 100 no matter what i do to the car. weather it be sitting idling or what not. and my sensor is in the sump.

and like what Locust2000 said it takes about 5 laps of the track to get up to 125deg thats when i know its time to slow down

locust is your turbo water cooled aswell or not?

that would contribute to heat aswell

but really unless its doing constant track work oil cooler not necessarily needed.. youd be better off heat wrapping exhaust to keep heat out of the bay

on a side note, did you get any blow by at 125 oil temps after 8 minutes using only a 30 weight?

I guess thats ok for short circut duty when the motor is in top shape.

(sam, log your temp in crome when the fan comes on vs your temp on your defi's)

my fan comes on 85ish on crome using stock sensor.
Just highlighting the fact that gauges and there senders can be placed in different locations and/or the gauge read differently.

The factory fan should not come on as late as 100C thats MUCH too hot, between 85-90 should be factory fan switch activation.

P.S love to see your car at the track some time 8)
