| Senior Member 3,000rpm (Grandma Drag) | ok, i got my turbo in the mail today lol, it is a ct9 off a toyota desiel turbo ans it has had the carbon seals changed so it kan run on a petrol engine, i also hav a ct12a without an exhaust housing so im goin to take the exhaust housing and propeller off the ct9 and put in on the ct12a, which will make it spool fasting....i think, but i might do that after i hav got the car, btw is the ef that DURTYEF3 has for sale http://nzhondas.com/phpBB2/fs-ef3-fa...-vtu71769.html , shud be getting it on wednesday, ill get sum pics up when i figure out how to, which will be soon hopefully, |

| Senior Member 3,000rpm (Grandma Drag) | got bored, so i decided to do the ct9/ct12-a hybrid turbo, i took all the bearings and the shaft out of the ct9 and put them into the ct12-a, perfict fit, except the intake propeller off the ct12-a doesnt quite fit the shaft off the ct9, so i will hav to get a very thin spacer or something tomoro, but everything else lines up good, the exhaust housing off the ct-9 fits perfectly onto the ct12-a so all is good |

Location: Christchurch | Why not a T3 or something? Your only going to come into trouble doing a turbo-build on the cheap. The money you saved getting a cheap turbo you will pay for later in getting the seals to change it to suit a petrol engine, and in custom fab to make a manifold flange to suit it, you could have used to get a T28, T3, TD04, or TD05 like everyone else does for these sorts of basic builds - and could get an off the shelf manifold to suit.

If you bothered searching you would find there are quite a few threads exactly the same as this, budget as turbo builds which end in disaster. If you want to build a turbo honda on the cheap, follow tarmac-'s example, I think he had a build thread floating round (yes, you will probably have to search for this). Otherwise do lot's of reading in the FI forums of www.honda-tech.com and www.homemadeturbo.com. Sometimes you have to help yourself before others can.

Location: Christchurch | Tarmac used a similar setup to what I was going to use, but I think he had a T3/T4 hybrid, as I remember him mentioning the idea of hybriding a skyline and rx7 turbo. I believe he had a lot of the parts lying around, or had mad hookups - because the parts ended up costing me a fair bit anyway. He also used an internal wastegate I think. Heres a brief rundown: T3 Turbo off an R32: $350 SSI Stainless Manifold: $700 (this is retail, however I got discount on top of this )VR4 injectors + plugs: $70 Evo8 Fuelpump: $50 Turbosmart BOV: $150 Turbosmart 35mm External Wastegate: $150 Custom ECU+Chip with basetune: $100 Spare Engine: $150 Downpiping+Intercooler piping: around $300 Evo6 Intercooler: $150 Hoses+Fittings: estimated around the $150-200 mark, never got them. Then labour/fabrication on top for the piping/oil tapping etc. So thats around the $2000 mark right there, and there are always costs on top - like the fact a turbo setup wears out parts more (clutch, driveline, etc). That was "on the cheap" but not super cheap. At low boost it should last you a while. You could go cheaper, but you'd only end up killing your engine faster.

Do you have fabrication skills? Can you weld and think about mechanical problems and solve them for yourself? If the answer to any of these question is no then a cheap turbo build is very very hard to manage unless you have a lot of good, handy friends.
